Ann Greig b c1800 Marykirk, Kincardineshire
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 17:06 GMT (UK) »
I am struggling to find the parents of Ann Greig who claims in censuses that she was born in Marykirk Kincardineshire c1800 but may not have been christened there. She married David Wallace a farmer in Laurencekirk/Fordoun Kincardineshire in Nov 1828. Together they had 5 children that I am aware of;
Elizabeth b c1830,
Ann b 20 Mar 1831 in Maryton
Alexander b c1834,
Mary b c1837 in Fearn and
Robert b c1839
Ann died on 19 Sep 1882 in Montrose but her death record does not give the names of her parents. Can anyone help me?

Hi Colin,
There is often a problem when a person dies over 80 years old because her descendants informing the registrar may have no idea who her/his parents were, far less her/his mother's maiden name.
This may be your Anne's birth/baptism on GRO ..
31/05/1797 GREIG ANNE ... ALEXR. GREIG/ANNE JAPP F MONTROSE /ANGUS 312/00 0050 0170
She had a son Alexander and a daughter Ann so that is a good fit .... depending on what forenames her husband David Wallis/Wallace had for parents!

Despite the crazy OCRing on Ancestry
this looks like them in 1841

1841 Scotland Census
Name: David Welch
Age: 55
Birth Year: abt 1786
Born Kincardineshire, Scotland
Residence  Johnshaven District 6
Occupation: Linen Manuf
David Welch 55
Ann Welch 35
Children:
Elizabeth Welch 15
Mary Welch 15
Margaret Welch 15
Ann Welch 15
Jean Welch 9
Jessy Welch 7
Sally Welch 5
Robert Greg Welch 8 MO ...this will be Greig methinks

So next look for a David Wallace born between 1782 and 1786 for his parents' forenames.

Ann claims to be 48 born in Marykirk in the 1851 Census, and David 45 born in Laurencekirk so that probably makes my previous post redundant. Only Mary aged 16 born in Fearn with them.
All living at Craigmaton, Fordoun with David an Agricultural Labourer.

OPR
David Wallace baptised  27 May 1804  in Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire
with father Alexander Wallace and mother Anne Ross
Brother William Wallace baptised 15 October 1791 Marykirk, Kincardine
Brother George Wallace baptised 20 April 1800 Laurencekirk, Kincardine

Hi DDJJake
Thanks for your several replies to my query.
I assume that your penultimate post was sent to me in error
The Wallace families in the 1851 Census and the OPR you refer to are the correct ones but I am really looking for Ann Greig's parents and family

Hi Colin,
I searched long and hard for Anne (Ann) Grieg on both GRO and the Mormon site ... but like you ...no joy. ..... Possibly listed under another name if born out of wedlock .... or more likely, just one of those families among the approx. 60% who, for a variety of reasons between 1560 and 1855 did not register with the Established Church of Scotland  ... lack of money/different branch of Christian Church ... e.g. Roman Catholic ..Seceders.

Hi DDJJake
Regrettably you may be right! However undeterred, I thought I should have a look at the 1841 Census for Marykirk to see if her parents were still living in the village at that time and surprise surprise I found a John and Mary Greig aged 65 and 60 respectively. A look at the 1851 Census revealed the same couple aged 85 and 76 respectively. Could this be my Ann Greig's parents? They are about the right age considering that Ann claims to have been born in 1803. Marykirk was too small a village (about 1000) to have many Greig families at that time. What do you think?

Hi Colin
In the 1841 Census John (Crofter) could have been 66-69 and Mary 61-64 .. but even then the 1851 Census ages show 85 and 67!
However, I notice in 1851 Census that John is a Book Hawker, born in Marykirk and Mary born in Fettercairn .... both born in Kincardineshire as said in 1841 Census.
You might get lucky and find a Mary ---- born in Fettercairn between 1780 and 1784 ?

Hi DDJJake
I would appreciate hearing your view on whether John & Mary Greig could be Ann's parents. It might interest you to know that one of Ann's sons-in-law was also a book salesman.
