Are you sure of these facts?

Thornton Dale appears to be very close to Pickering if I look at the map.
The death record should be under Ryedale district, it went there from Pickering in 1936 (from UKBMD.org) but there are very few Hardy deaths in Ryedale.  There are five between 1962 and 1968 and none of them a Herbert - Annie, John, William, william and Hannah are the only ones.

There is a Herbert Hardy in the Dewsbury district round about 1959 aged 79.  That's the nearest match I could find.

Looks like he's a Footman in Rotherfield, Sussex in 1901 ref. RG13/898/7/5. Are you sure he came back to Yorkshire?

Thanks for replies. For some reason I thought Herbert retired to Thornton dale to live with his sister Mary hardy and died 1961 , although I can't remeber where this came from.. I could be wrong here as nothing found. Scarborough is a possibility . Yes he was the Herbert identified in the 1901 census at Rotherfield . I have not been able to find him in the 1911 Census although I do know he was in service all his life and family tradition has it that he had been a valet to Lord Derby. I am hoping to find hid death certificate to try and throw a bit of light on things.
