Hi justwondered if any one as heard of the batty family. They were fairground people. His name was jabez,he married Elizabeth Potter(manchester)Someone kindly sent me an article of jabez who was the proprieter of swingboats. There was an accident.the bar broke on one of his swingboats and sent a girl in the air ,luck would have it she was just badly shaken.I know they did live in caravans,in Barnsley, but they also must have travelled alot.

Hi Dorcus

The new address of the Romany and Traveller FHS website is: www.rtfhs.org.uk (Thanks for flagging us up, Rob!)

And I've got one reference to a Batty with a fairground/Gypsy connection. A Herbert Battye, son of Tom, married Florence May Lee at Holy Trinity church, South Shore, Blackpool, on 25 August 1907. Florence belonged to the Lee and Boswell families of Gypsies who had made the South Shore sandhills their home since the mid-1800s.

Herbert was born c1884. I haven't followed this family any further but am in touch with a descendant of Herbert and Florence who lives in Australia.

Best wishes

Thank- you Sharon

Have not done much with the Batty family, only that he was a fairground proprieter.

Jabez was my gr grandad, and on the census he travelled alot and lived in caravans.

Will have to look deeper into it.

Thanks for the links you sent me.

                 Regards

Hi Dorcus

I don't know if this thread is still live... but..

I think we may be related!  My gr grandfather was Jabez Batty, he was part of a travelling fair in and around Barnsley :-)
