New Gray Street Sunderland
« on: Thursday 03 March 11 17:10 GMT (UK) »
My Gt Gt Grandfather died of consumption in New Grey Street Sunderland, despite the fact that he lived in Deptford (he was landlord of the Shoulder of Mutton at the time) Was there an infirmary or some special place in that street for people with consumption? The person present at his death was Jane Smith who I cannot connect to the family, I am assuming she may have been a nurse.

Can anyone help please

Jim,

Thank you for the two posts for Ambrose Robson. I have only recently found the photograph of the Shoulder of Mutton in a great new book called A Historical Look at The Pubs of Deptford, Millfield and Pallion compiled by Ron Lawson

Searching for deaths for Ambrose Robson's wife Mary, I came across another death in Ettrick Olace, New Grey Street on 2 September 1842. This is not the Mary I was looking for but thought it might confirm that there was some kind of Infirmary or Sanitorium here. (Ettrick Olace is how it is transcribed but I guess it is Ettrick Place).

Added later
Having searched this Mary I found her living in New Grey Street with husband James and children in 1841 so no longer relevant

This was a working class area, they would more than likely have died at home.Consumption was very common & really only those with money could afford treatment at a sanatorium.

Thanks Jim.

Perhaps I will never know why he died away from his home. His oldest living child was only 12 in 1844 and as far as I am aware he was the publican at The Shoulder of Mutton in Deptford until his death.

I found a Jane Smith living in New Grey Street in 1841. She was a woman of independent means and in later census it was clear that she made her money from renting property. It was a Jane Smith who was present at Ambrose' death.

It's all a mystery!
