Halifax Orphanage /Sowerby Bridge West End
« on: Friday 04 March 11 09:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have two question if anyone knows.

1.  DOes anyone have any knowledge of the Halifax Orphanage, I can't find much information on line.  One of mine was an 'inmate' in 1871. It clearly wasn't just an Orphanage as he was 32 and looks like a workhouse. Just wondered what info was avialable out there, and if there are any records to look at.

2. A lot of my 'Cleggs' lived in West Street / West End Sowerby Bridge, and my Great Great Grandfather's brother William Clegg was very involved in the West End COngregational Church.  I don't know where he was buried yet (died 1900), but I do know my Greatx3 Grandmother Mary Whitehead was buried there in August 1874.

Using old maps in 1994 I decided to take the four hour drive to visit, but of course not enough research as I found a different spirit there in the form of a petrol station. I have read somewhere that the Sunday school was still there where the graves were (I never saw it) but that again that has recently been removed.  My question is if anyone knows if the graves were moved or built upon, and if any of the gravstones were preserved.

Cheers

Neil

Hello Neil,
The graveyard you are looking for was indeed under a petrol station on West Street Sowerby Bridge, it was dug up in 2006 to make way for flats, these flats were never built and the land still stands vacant.
There is an article here regarding the dis-internment of the graves and subsequent cremation at Park Wood.

http://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk/news/local/human_bones_to_be_dug_up_to_make_way_for_flats_1_1964355

Halifax Reference Library has a reel of microfilm of the church records, listing most of the memebers of the congregation, how they were elected to the congregation, what became of them( if they moved away, where to and to which church they were affiliated to, also lots of mention of lapsed memberships) Baptism's, a few marriages and some burials, also most of the meetings of the church council minutes are preserved. There are also pamphlets concerning the Jubilee of 1890 and 1900, and various other notes.
if you have not already seen this reel of film it is well worth browsing.
If you want anything in particular looking for let me know and i will see what i can find,
Regards,
Andy

i have found a photograph of the church from around 1964, it is in David Cliff's book Images of England,Sowerby Bridge printed in 2006.

Hi
THanks for that information very ineresting. Seems I was a little late to see that removal. I wonder if the gravestones were preserved, I doubt it.

Inteserestingly seeing your names, the Mary WHitehead I referred to who was buried there, i believe to havehad the surname Gaukroger!.
