Can anyone please help.  i have the marriage cert for Edith m Bailey and Albert J Underwood m1916  22 jan Oakham reg office.  7a 638  matildas father is written as George William Bailey, Stationary engine Driver.  confusing as her illigitimate son is also George W Bailey (My grandad)  1911 whissendine.  Have no idea of matilda birth place or fathers details.  Also the witnesess are joseph bailey and C E Goakes. A Joseph was living with his grandmother in ashwell Rutland in 1891 and 1901 cencus. Born c1882 ashwell.  this is very confusing as there was a george bailey in earlier cencus husband to sarah Ann bailey nee ?the Grandmother b Whissendine 1828.  Who are the parents and the link between joseph and edith.  can i still order birth cert if the birth place unknown ?  Hope i am not asking too much.  Also checked st andrews Baptisms and cannot find Joseph Bailey.

You refer to her as Matilda - was that her middle name?

Hello, only just seen your reply and thanks.  Edith Matilda Bailey was about 24 when she married in 1916 to Albert joseph Underwood b1885 Pickwell leicestershire.  There is a Joseph Bailey  married to Emily annie  waddingham Bollands in 1919 Oakham.    Also someone has a Elizabeth A ?? as Ediths mother in their ancestry tree.  B c1856 place unknown.

Did you look at FreeBMD? Have you looked at any censuses?

However, bearing in mind the birth of her illegitimate som George William in 1911, I can only find one Edith Bailey in Rutland in 1911.

Tracing this Edith back to 1901, and knowing she was born in Grafton Underwood, Northamptonshire, I can only find an Edith S Bailey?! 
Grafton Underwood is in the Kettering Registration District, and that leads to a birth:
March qtr 1892, Kettering
Bailey, Edith Sarah

Obviously not your Edith!

The Edith Matilda BAILEY b. Islington Sep Q 1890 apparently died there Dec Q 1890 aged 0, which rules her out.

There are no other obvious candidates on the GRO index, and nothing springs out at me from the censuses.   

Possibilities:

1.  Edith wasn't born in England/Wales.
2.  She was registered under another surname and subsequently changed it to Bailey.
3.  She didn't like her first name(s), and changed to Edith Matilda.  (It happened...)

Following the witness Joseph Bailey is a good idea, but I haven't been able to make any definite link from him to your Edith.   It's unclear who his parents are - one of Sarah's unmarried daughters I guess?  There's another grandson living with Sarah in 1891/1901 (William/George Wm.), but no grandaughter Edith.

His birth was registered as "Joe":

No guarantee he's Edith's brother though!

Thanks again, and you are right about confusing family.  Many brick walls.  There is a family tree online which has Edith Matilda with same father, and mother  Elizabeth A born in Barrowdon Rutland 1856, but cant find them in any census.     Makes ordering birth cert difficult.

you could be the missing link. I have been searching for all this info and all my family is related to the tiffens, baileys, waddingham, wigginton, i have alot of info, dates etc
