Hi Ros :)

maybe heard my mother's advice, which I believe speaks volumes -

To be born a gentleman is a coincidence
To die a gentleman is an achievement.

... or bare-faced effrontery! Think if I'd been so slotted into place by time and circumstance I would have been tempted to cock a snook. Maybe that's why they all came to NZ?

Well,well,well!
thought it was common knowledge that a Gentleman always treated the female of the species as a Lady until she herself proved otherwise? ::)

Is this what you mean, Goggy ??:

A gentleman "of the the old school" entered a lift.

A woman entered after him.

The gentleman removed his hat as a sign of respect for a lady.

The lift started, but was somewhat slow, which caused the woman to exclaim,
"I wish this d*mned lift would get a move on !"

The gentleman said nothing but quietly replaced his hat on his head.

I found the same listing on a marriage certificate - the bride's father is listed as a 'gentleman' and in the 1881 census he has listed his occupation as a gentleman - I quess it was considered a legitimate full time occupation  :) to be opening doors, etc etc etc

Yes Bob, style, says it all!!

Now that we have a selection of opinions,we could just carry on as before and suffer the slings and arrows of our own miss interpretations?
Know what I mean like????
                       Cheers, Goggy,
