Ken .
What was the role of a Paymaster and Quartermaster.
This is all I  can find. Surely  if he was in a Regiment then he wasn`t sitting in an office somewhere  ???

Paymaster.
It was occasionally a cabinet-level post in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and many future prime ministers served as Paymaster
Records of the Office of the Paymaster General
Established: In the War Department by the act creating the Pay Department (3 Stat. 297), April 24, 1816.
Predecessor Agencies:
Paymaster of the Army (1792-1816)
Functions: Paid the army.

Quartermaster
refers to two different military occupations. In land armies, it is a term referring to either an individual soldier or a unit, who specializes in distributing supplies and provisions to troops.

Each regiment would have its own quartermaster, paymaster and paymaster adjutant who travelled with the regiment.

Hi Folks,

Following Wilcoxon's lead, I would like to know where John died. Was it battle related?

Is there a register of war graves for this period?

from Wilcoxon: War Office, postings, 26 December 1823, 2nd West India Regiment, paymaster Fox, deceased.

Some historical research leads me to a number of 2nd West India Reg. deaths in 1823.
at, or related to, Sierra Leone.

However, an authority on another site insists that the regiment was in Rio Pongo (1820) and Modern Ghana (1823-24).

Can you help with this too?  :)

There was a serious outbreak of yellow fever at Sierra Leone, and  newspaper reports that a Captain Fox, 2nd West India Regiment died.
Is this our man, would a Captain also be a Paymaster.  ???  the problem is there were quite a few officers named Fox. I don`t think it is him.
