When I was enquiring about my GFs military records, I was also intrigued about the next of kin thing.

My grandfather died young, my grandmother had only listened to snippets and filled in the blanks herself. Listening to some of the stories he could have been an admiral in Nelsons fleet (no offence to my GM though, she had other things to think about).

Anyway, I asked to to give me the written authority for me to find out, which she did. She never did ask what I found out. Perhaps she really did know, but just didn't want to be reminded of what her husband had gone through.
