COMPLETED - Help needed to trace Joseph Smith - Sutton, Derbyshire
« on: Saturday 12 March 11 21:53 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace Joseph Smith born about 1810 in Sutton, Derbyshire.  He married a Mary Ann (unknown surname) and by 1841 was a publican in Chesterfield.  They had six children; Mary Ann b 1837, Eliza b 1939, Sarah b 1844, George Harry b 1849, Albert b 1850 and Emily b 1852.   I'd love to be able to find out Mary Ann's maiden name, but trying to a trace a Joseph Smith marrying a Mary Ann is proving a little difficult to say the least!  From the census records, I know that Mary Ann was born in Staveley around 1810 and I am guessing that they would have been married in that parish.  IGI has proved fruitless so I was wondering if anyone had access to any parish records in this area that might help me search further back.  Smith is such a hard name to research when there are so many!

Hello and welcome to rootschat  :)

Looking at the censuses, Joseph was married twice.

1841 HO107; Piece 194; Book: 5;  Folio: 4; Page: 2
has him with wife Mary and children Mary and Eliza

1851 HO107; Piece: 2147; Folio: 412; Page: 12
has him with wife Ann and younger children. There is a 'daughter in law' Sarah Ann Mitchell 14 yrs

Free BMD has a marriage for Joseph Smith and Ann Mitchell 1847 as possible spouses.

Birth certificate of Eliza would give you Mary's name and his marriage cert to Ann would give you his father's name.

1841 also shows Mary as 'not born in county'. There is an Ann Richards 65 yrs 'Independent' in the same household who is also not born in county. :-\

best wishes

Thanks for that information Gardener  :) I am fairly sure that I have the right families for 1841 and 1851 and hoping that katincornwall will come back with her opinion.

regards

1841 HO107; Piece 196; Book: 5; Folio: 25; Page: 14

has a Joseph Riley 62 yrs and Martha 60 yrs in Staveley area. He is a Scythe manufacturer, perhaps these are Ann's parents.
There are a couple of Ann(e) Riley marriages but no Mitchell.  :-\
There are several Mitchell deaths in Free BMD so difficult to find a spouse for Ann.

There is a death for a Joseph Riley Mitchell in 1841.
Family Search has baptism - 1835- parents William and Ann.

I can't see Ann or Sarah Ann in 1841 though  :-\

The IGi has this baptism

Joseph Riley Mitchell at Staveley 19th Apr 1835
parents William Mitchell and Ann

and there is

Sarah Ann Mitchell at Chesterfield 28th Nov 1838
parents William Mitchell and Ann

there are earlier baptisms at Staveley with parents William and Hannah Mitchell, don't know if they fit too:

John Mitchell Jan 10th 1831
Joseph Mitchell 21st Oct 1833 died 24th Oct 1833

The one for Joseph Riley Mitchell looks good at least.

Hi,
yes I agree with Joseph Riley Mitchell, who sadly dies in 1841 (maaybe that's why I can't see them in 1841 census  ???) and I would imagine Sarah Ann is the one who is in 1851 census.

Looking forward to hearing from katincornwall as you seem to have provided the answer to Ann's name etc.
I suppose it depends which family member is katincornwall's ancestor - Mary or Ann?

Wow - thank you very much for all that info!!  I have had a look at familysearch and the info on there certainly seems to fit in with the research I have already got.  Thank you so much for the help.  Sometimes it just takes a fresh pair of eyes to see something.  I hadn't picked up on Joseph being married twice at all.
