The Elizabeth Elstob in Dover in 1851 gives her age as 51, born Romsey Hants.

The Elizabeth born Biggleswade is living in Edmonton in 1861 age 57 with daughter Elizabeth 30, indexed as Elsteb.

Hang on though! In 1871 in St George Hanover Square is Charles M Elstob 30 head, with Dryden Elstob father 76 b Bermondsey, and Betsey Elstob mother 72 b Romsey Hants.

Elizabeth née Quenby must have died after 1871, so leaving no doubt that the 1868 death was Elizabeth Elstob née Marsom

Thank you John and David for your help.

It is now obvious that the Elizabeth Elstob who died in Biggleswade in 1830 has no connection with my Elizabeth Elstob nee Quenby.

Dryden Elstob married Elizabeth Quenby in 1821 at St Dunstan’s, Stepney. He married his second wife Betsy Young in 1830 at Romsey Abbey Hants, she was born in 1799 Romsey Hants.

It was thought at first that Elizabeth Quenby died some time before 1830 but she is listed in the 1851 census for Dover Kent as a lodger with two of her son’s John A Elstob and Charles M Elstob.

Once again thank you both for your help.

Surely the Elizabeth in Dover in 1851 age 51 born Romsey can only be the second wife, Betsey Young, whom Dryden married in Romsey in 1830???

There's an Elizabeth Elstob age 26 buried at St George in the East on 1 Dec 1825, who looks to be  the first wife, Elizabeth Quenby. Dryden and Elizabeth baptised 3 children at St George in the East: Mary 1822, Dryden 1824 and Elizabeth Ann 1825.

In 1841 in St George Hanover Square there's:
Dryden Eistob 45 Ind
Betsy Eistob 35 Not born in Middlesex
Dryden Eistob 15 Navy
Elizabeth Eistob 15
Charles Eistob 2

which makes clear that it's the same Dryden who married both wives.

If you don't have full details of the baptisms of the children by the first marriage and full census details I'll gladly provide them, along with details of Dryden junior's brushes with the law which caused him to be a guest of Her Majesty on a couple of occasions.

So Elizabeth (Quenby) was buried at St George in the East on 1 Dec 1825, and Betsy (Young) on 3 Dec 1880 at Battersea.

Yes you are right but why would she use the name Elizabeth when her name was Betsy? I know that her husband Dryden was in prison for bankruptcy at the time and perhaps she used the name of Dryden’s first wife’s to keep one step in front of there creditors.  Very confusing.

Thank you for the information on Elizabeth Elstob age 26 buried at St George in the East on 1 Dec 1825, that’s new to me, thank you.

I tried to find them on the 1841 census on findmypast with out any success. Do you have the 1841 census reference for St George Hanover Square?

1841 HO107/733/2 folio 28 page 5 . Enumerated as Eistob, but Ancestry has transcribed them as Eistob and Cistob

Betsey is just a diminutive of Elizabeth. Have you found her baptism to see if she was Elizabeth or Betsey?

Thank you for the reference to the 1841 census.

Extracts from the Romsey parish records, Betsey Young born 24-1-1799, baptized 21-2-1799.
Marriage entry for Romsey Abbey, 19 Aug 1830, Mr Dryden Elstob, widower of St Dunstans Stepney, to Betsey Young of Romsey, spinster. Witnesses – John Young, Harriet Young, Sophia Stephens, William Bell, Mary Ann Venturm and Mary Ann Arthur. Betsey Elstob died on the 29 Nov 1880 at Hammersmith.

In all the records that I have seen so far she is listed as Betsey apart from that one census in 1851 for Dover Kent.

Going back to your offer re family of Dryden Elstob and Betsey Young. I have the baptisms of two of there children Mary 1822 and Dryden 1824 but not Elizabeth Ann 1825. I would be grateful if you could let me have Elizabeth Ann Elstob 1825 baptism details when you have the time.

I do have some information Dryden Elstob’s escapades but I don’t have any thing on his son’s brushes with the law. I would be grateful if you could let me have the details when you get time.
