Thomas Frederick Purcell 1877-1954 Completed
« on: Monday 14 March 11 22:45 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help with information regarding Thomas Frederick Purcell. His obituary says that he was born in Derby abt 1877 and that he married Kathleen/Katherine Corrin, who it is thought was born on the I.O.M. in 1888.
No birth or marriage records can be found for him, and he does not seem to be recorded on any census returns.
Thank you.

Given Thomas's age when these children were born, it's possible that Katherine may have been previously married in which case you won't find a Corrin/Purcell marriage

This is what may happen

Katherine Corrin marries Joe Bloggs and is then widowed

Katherine Bloggs marries Thomas Purcell

Purcell children's births will show mothers birth surname - not her previous married name

Hi Carole
We did think that maybe she didn't actually get married, but have never considered the fact that she could have married previously. (Back to the searching again). There is still the mystery of why there are no records of a birth, or census returns for Thomas Frederick Purcell.
Thank you for your help.

Hi,

This is just a thought, but does the obituary state he was born in Derby Derbyshire or perhaps
the town of Derby?  If not have you considered the possibility that he could have been born
in West Derby, Liverpool?

Do you have any idea of his occupation?

Does it actually use the words "Born in Derby"  or does it say something like "from Derby" or "of Derby"

Hi spendlove and CaroleW
The obituary starts off " Born in Derby"
It is possible that we have read it to mean Derby in Derbyshire, when in actual fact it means West Derby as you suggest spendlove. He worked at the Vulcan Foundry near Wigan for 30 years from 1922 to 1952 when he retired.
Thank you both very much for your help, I will now see if I can find anything in West Derby.
