**COMPLETED**FLITTON with Silsoe Baptism 1643
« on: Tuesday 15 March 11 19:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Could anyone look for a baptism for a Stephen Giddins 1 Oct 1643 with his father as Robert Giddins at Flitton.  The surname may also be down as Giddings, Giddens or even Gittins.

I've found it on the IGI but it's not an extracted record, just a member submission which is not always reliable.

Thanks.

Karen

Flitton baptisms have been transcribed on FreeReg at http://www.freereg.org.uk/search/index.htm

I can't see him!

I've  just trawled through Hugh Wallis' site for Flitton looking at all the surnames beginning with G and found him under Gaddins!

I then went to FreeReg to see if he was there with that spelling, but  no luck.

At least I have something to work on now.

Thanks for taking an interest.

I still can't find him on FreeReg, but it's a site that I find has no flexibility for searching, with no wildcard option other than Soundex, and you have to include the surname. So for a difficult one like this you have to hit on the exact sequence of letters that the transcriber has decided on, otherwise it comes up blank.

Yes, I've found quite  lot on FreeReg, but the searching can be a bit hit and miss at times - still it's better than nothing.

I'll keep trying different variations, it would be interesting to see how they've transcribed it. When I'm next in Bedford RO I'll have a look at their transcipts out of interest, but would they be the same as  the extracted record I found  on Hugh Wallis' site though?

FreeReg's instructions to transcribers is to write down what you see, not what you think it should be when you've applied bit of common sense, even if you know it's not correct. So for baptisms where the name is spelt differently even though you know it's the same family name, you have to write down what it is, not how you would want it to be if you were researching that name.

Yes, I realise  they should always transcribe what was originally written.  Finding those elusive names is all part of the challenge for us.

The PR baptism transcript actually has 1 Oct 1643 Stephen son of Robert GADDINS

The burials has one for Robert GYDDINGS on 23 May 1687 & one for Thomas son of Robert GIDDINS of Silsoe on 7 Sept 1664 so he's not the Thomas baptised in 1663 as he is son of Thomas.
