COMPLETED - Derbyshire or Notts? Dicken death
« on: Thursday 17 March 11 20:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello  ;D

I want to find out where to look for a possible will for my ancestor George DICKEN who died 25 September 1850 in Glapwell, Bolsover. The death certificate shows the registration district as Mansfield.  It then says "1850 Death in the sub-district of Pleasley in the counties of Derby and Nottingham".

I have looked at the Derbyshire Archives for wills between 1858 and 1928 and have already got copies of wills for other George DICKEN men listed here: http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/images/CO-D%20(PDF%2C%20904kb)_tcm9-16970.pdf

I was wondering where to look for wills before 1858. The Derbyshire Archives website says wills pre-1858 are kept at Lichfield Record Office. I tried looking at their website but can't seem to find any reference to wills. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to provide a web address for this?  Or might Mansfield come under Nottingham Archives?

I know that Glapwell was in Bolsover in 1841 and in Mansfield in 1851 censuses but I'm not sure when the boundary changed.

Hope someone can advise on some of the above queries.

Thanks,

Nick The Duck

hello, i lived in pleasley until about 5 months ago and i can tell you that there is still an on going problem with the boundaries of notts and derby. my postcaode was NG, but a row of terrace houses down they were DE. i do know that mansfield is under nottingahmshire now, and on census records from 1851 and 61 it was mansfield nottinghamshire.
the archives for mansfield will be at nottinghamshire.

I don't know about Notts, however Lichfield web site is www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/contact/LichfieldRecordOffice/.

If you know the date of death of the person, they will do a lookup for a couple of years after this in their index for free. More substantial searching attracts a fee.

I think copies of wills (or whatever documentation there is) is 4.50 from memory.
Too many to list! But always particularly interested in my eight ggp lines : ALLEN, HODGKINSON, FLINT, SWINDELL, SHELDON, BINGHAM, JACKSON - all in Derbyshire; and ELLWOOD in Cambridgeshire

Just to let you know that the will for George DICKEN, Bolsover, was proved in October 1850. It is held at Lichfield Record Office. Thanks for helping. And yes, it's 4.50!
