LANCHISHEAR in Lovington Somerset
« on: Friday 18 March 11 06:40 GMT (UK) »
On new familysearch I just found

Elizabeth Lanchishear
burial: 12 Sep 1725 (and also ( Sep 1725)— Lovington, Somerset, England
parents: William Lanchishear
There are some records in Kilmington some 13 miles away.

Otherwise that is all I can find - I've tried for William and indeed the search engine looks for various spellings Lancashire, Lankesheer, Lankshear.

I am a LANKSHEAR and I trace back to 1713 Robert LANCHISHEAR marriage in Clanfield Oxfordshire.

Perhaps same spelling in Somerset indicates origin around there.

Does anyone have access to Lovington and Castle Cary records.
Thank you

Hi Ron,

Although better than before, the new Familysearch site still has very poor coverage of Somerset. It's usually better to try FreeREG   http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

Entering surname Lancashire (with Soundex) and county Somerset gives 280 baptisms, quite a lot of them in Castle Cary in the 16th and 17th centuries.  FreeREG is not complete either, for example Castle Cary marriages are not included yet, although they are "in progress".

Castle Cary and Lovington are in the Catash Hundred, so it may be worth joining the Somerset Hundreds Group for that area   http://groups.yahoo.com/group/catsash/

They have downloadable transcripts of the Lovington registers. Not yet of Castle Cary but they probably will once the FreeREG transcriptions are completed. You may well find the transcriber is a member of the group.

Thanks very much David

I'm looking at the Freereg now and I am surprised at the coverage. FreeReg is indeed progressing. I can see two possible William in Castle Cary
And
05 Jul 1686   LANCHASHEIRE   Robert   Somerset   Castle Cary
that would make my Robert who marries in Clanfield in 1713 around 27 and same age as his bride Frances.
This could be a major brickwall break out.
No burials or marriages on FreeReg for Robert.

I suppose look for a Will for his father Robert also

The soundex is very good - I tried with Lanchishear and 286. Even picks up Lancaster in first name
I wish some commercial sites used a soundex like that

Now why didn't I think of Yahoo groups - I'll be off and join

Many thanks David
