Richard GARLAND c1771
« on: Friday 18 March 11 14:54 GMT (UK) »
Richard GARLAND m Elizabeth DAW on 11 Nov 1792 in Stoke Damerel. Presumably, he was born c 1771, but where and to whom?
The best I have found so far is 14 July 1770 in Tiverton, to Richard & Mary, the 7th child in a family of 9, but there are not enough 'family' names to give any certainty. Are there any other likely Richard GARLANDs out there waiting for me?

Richard GARLAND b. 1771 in Tiverton was still alive in 1851, living in Llandilofawr, Llandilo, Wales, a widower, described as a Gentleman and annuitant. He is shown in the same location in 1841 married to a Hannah, so I think this may eliminate the Tiverton Richard from your searches.
I note that he & Elizabeth named one of their children Francis Burrell GARLAND (bapt 27 Dec 1802, born 10 Oct 1802.) Perhaps BURRELL is a clue. I also note that a Bartholomew and a Humphrey GARLAND also married and were having children in Stoke Damerel at that time - brothers perhaps? Bartholomew was a shop keeper; Humphrey a labourer and Richard a cordwainer.
A Richard GARLAND was buried at Stoke Damerel 6 Nov 1816, aged 62 - making his birthdate ca 1754.
A Francis GARLAND was buried at Stoke Damerel 24 Sep 1836, aged 76, making his birthdate ca 1766.
A John GARLAND was buried at Stoke Damerel 10 Oct 1835, aged 85. He was Sexton of the parish of Stoke Damerel for 53 years.
The name was prevalent in the parish - it may be necessary to check other Plymouth area church baptisms. I have looked at Plymouth St Andrew for you - no luck there.

DOB7,
Yes, that certainly seems to eliminate the Tiverton Richard GARLAND from my researches. All I have to do now is find the right one!
I'll have a look at the other names you provided to see if any of them fit in with what I have already.
Thanks for your help

Having recently returned to the search after an enforced absence, I am still unable to find this ancestor despite all the data which has become accessible since my last visit. Can anyone help me now, please?

Hello again. I've just looked at the marriage entry, and note that a Peter GARLAND was a witness. Richard was described as a cordwainer and both he & Peter signed their names so were somewhat literate.

A Peter GARLAND was baptised in Stoke Damerel 13 Jan 1765, son of Isaac & Sarah GARLAND.
A Peter GARLAND, husbandman was married in Stoke Damerel in 1765 to a Letitia ROGERS. Again, Peter signed his name - you could compare signatures.

Thanks.

It seems reasonable to assume that Peter and Richard were related, even that they were brothers. Therefore, Isaac and Sarah GARLAND must be Richard's parents. If so, why is there apparently no record of Richard's baptism? I'll see if I can find any other children of Isaac and Sarah.

Of some concern is the fact that, if Isaac and Sarah are my ancestors, I have not, as yet, found the name Isaac carried forward in the GARLAND family.

Or, the parents could be Peter & Letitia GARLAND who married in 1765.

Concerning your 14.32, that would certainly account for Peter. So, are they cousins or brothers? Or, is Peter (the witness) the father of Richard (the groom)?

On your 15.56, yes, I've picked up both of those burials. Many thanks.
