You can check births of Basil up to 1932 in WA (but after 1905 they don't give parents' names for privacy reasons).  The only Basil birth I found which corresponds to a possible husband for Mary CALLAGHAN if married in WA is SMITH.

Several days ago I traced the CHANEY family back to a Mrs CHANEY nee MELLOR.

Emma Maria MELLOR born St Kilda VIC married in VIC in 1889 to Frederick Charles CHANEY born London.  Reg. Number: 8760

So not connected to the missing Mary.

Thanks Rosball I see on the WA marriage records, a Basil Magro married Sylvia E Chaney in 1935. I feel that these must be relations from the other side of the family, and not my ancestors but I could be completely wrong! Will keep digging
