Obviously, Elizabeth won't be found on any census.
She wasn't born in 1871, and had left England by 1881.

Do you have any clues for the others re ages?

Are you sure the surname is spelled GARRATT?
I know, from personal experience, the number of mis-spellings!

Any clues at all will help.

Possible birth of Elizabeth:

March qtr 1875
Medway district    vol 2a, page 459
Garratt, Elizabeth Mary A

And a marriage:

September qtr 1871
Medway district    vol 2a, page 667

Garratt, John George
Axcell, Harriett Mary
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

1871 census has this:
Reference RG10/909/84/11
High Street, Alma Place, Chatham

Axall, Charles  Head  M  51  Cordwainer (Journeyman)  b Chatham
Axall, Harriett  Wife  F  51  b Chatham
Axall, Harriett  Daughter  F  19  b Chatham
Axall, Mary Ann  Daughter  F  10  b Chatham

John Garratt is more difficult to find, as there are a number of possibilities.
in Ann Street, Plumstead, Woolwich:
Garratt, John Lodger  31  Labourer, Woolwich Arsenal  b Milton, Leicestershire

in West Street, Sittingbourne
Garrett, John G  Lodger  20  Cooper  b Portsmoyh, Hampshire

And another 9 x Garrett, John in Kent of marriageable age!
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Some possibilities with a marriage in September qtr 1871 (after the  Census dat.  From Elizabeth Mary's death transcription:  birthplace is listed as Chatham.  Is this in the area of Medway District?   I also found in The bicentenial Dictionary of WA  that John  is recorded as John George GARRATT, Cooper.  The other siblings are born after 1871 Census.  What is the best way to access these records?

With thanks
Carol

From the beginning of Civil Registration (July 1837) until 1941, Chatham was indeed included in the Medway Registration District.

The occupation of Cooper, for me anyway, nails the correct John Garratt in 1871:
Reference RG10/983/127/18
West Street, Sittingbourne

Garrett, John G  Lodger  M  20  Cooper, b Portsmouth.

Not sure what else you are after?

The BMD references I found are all on FreeBMD. It's Free! ;D
Once you have the reference, you can order a copy of the birth/marriage/death certificate.
You can order these from GRO https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Yes I thought the 1871 Sittingbourne man looks just right for the 1871 marriage
and for sure this birth must be him

I have looked on 1871 census via Ancestry site and still can not get a match for John George GARRATT at West St, Sittingbourne.

As I have  so many certificates to purchase do you know of a transcription service available in the UK,  as I live in Aus.

Lateral thinking needed!!  :D

Try looking under GARRETT!

There are no transcriptions of the actual certificates - you simply have to pay the money. :(

Maybe parish records would help?  Try cityark.medway.org.uk? Thay might be able to help

My surname is Garrad - i have found it spelled as Garrard, Garrod, Garrett, Garratt, etc.
So I am well used to lateral thinking with surnames! ;D

BMD certificates you buy from the government at
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
cost is GBP 9.25 each if you have the full ref - as per postings

Transcription services are ok for Aust certs - no need to pay extra to an Aussie agent for UK certs.
You save on the credit card conversion charges by buying a few at once
