Edinburgh Unionist Club/5 Duncan Street
« on: Saturday 19 March 11 19:55 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out what was at 5 Duncan Street in 1909 when one of OH's ancestors married there. His address at the time was in Leith.

I have been able to find "became a girls' day school from 1855 to 1891 and was later to serve as a dancing academy and then as a masonic lodge". we do have a history of having dance academies in the family (Stewarts Ballroom) but I wonder if it was a Masonic Lodge in 1909?

Does anyone know?

This is a link to the PO Directory for 1908-9 for Duncan Street. There are two, one in Newington, another in Leith  www.archive.org/stream/postofficeedinbu19081909edin#page/524/mode/2up

This is the main link for the PO Directories if you need to search for other years www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Edinburgh

Thanks very much for the links! I've not done that much Scottish research and was not aware of the PO books - I can see my evening will be filled!

My fist thought was maybe it was the Leith Duncan Street but on reviewing the marriage it was in Newington District - every number listed in the phone book for Duncan Street in Newington EXCEPT no 5!!

I know, just been looking also - isn't it always so!

Someone recently posted this link http://addressinghistory.edina.ac.uk/  If you click on 'places' and then add 5 Duncan Street, it brings up some entries (you have to scroll down the page after clicking search as the results are added below on the same page), a few years earlier (c.1905). You can then click on the link on the side to view the entry on the PO directory.

Been also trying some searches on the Scotsman, which at the best of times is never easy on search words. Did find one on 8 Oct. 1909 for a birth of a son to a Mr and Mrs J Stewart at 5 Duncan Street. From memory (with gaps!) of your other posts, were they Stewarts you were researching?

It is your Stewarts isn't it!

A mention on 26 August 1909 in the Scotsman that Mr James Stewart of 5 Duncan Street, Edinburgh was unanimously elected President for the ensuing year (by the Scottish Branch of the British Association of the Teachers of Dancing)

Added: Searching the PO Directories by names rather than streets brings up better results The 1908-9 Directory has James living at 6 Abbey Mount www.archive.org/stream/postofficeedinbu19081909edin#page/376/mode/2up However, by the 1909-10, the Stewarts were at 5 Duncan Street www.archive.org/stream/postofficeedinbu19091910edin#page/378/mode/2up

Fabulous!! Yes they are mine or rather my husbands!

James was OH's great grand uncle according to FTM (his wife was sister to OH's Great grandmother) I have photos of Stewarts Dance hall and his wife Julia sat outside.

Julia caused me great problems when she died in a car accident in 1925 (see my previous posts on here!)

When you searched did anything show James marrying after 1925?

Can I ask you what the name of the child was you found in Oct 1909? I'll look for the birth certificate as they didn't marry until December 1909! I did mean to look for possible births but I got side tracked and found some of the Stewarts in the PO books! (they were also wine merchants and aerated water manufacturers!)

Thanks for your help

Duncan Street named after Admiral Duncan, 1731-1804, Victor of Camperdown, 1797, the street was named this in 1827, No 5 is still the Unionist Club, other than that no idea Sorry.

Cheers.

Archie.
