Aleric Allan BURRAGE
« on: Monday 21 March 11 07:53 GMT (UK) »
I've been looking for info about my ggfather who's name was Aleric Allan Burrage... or so I thought. I have also found other references to him, being called Henry Alaric Burrage, or Alaric Henry Burrage. His family all called him Alec. I have a reference of birth stating his name was Aleric Allan, articles in The Argus state he was called Henry Aleric & a reference of his marriage to my ggmother said his name was Aleric Henry,  so now I'm  not sure about which name is the right one...    HELP!!!

Hi Mondans - welcome to Rootschat.

Some dates (even approximate), places and parent names would be helpful.

Legally your 'real' name is the name you are known by.  Nowadays you need to provide documentary proof of change of name to make alterations to bank accounts etc.  However, in times past, there was often no actual evidence of names people used.

Is this your chap?

Birth, Victoria, 1860 reg no 18709
Allan Alaric BURRAGE,
Father: Thomas Allare Burrage
Mother:   Mary Wilson
Birth Place: St Kilda,

Marriage:
1887, Victoria, reg no 7066
Allan Alaric BURRAGE
Spouse    Isabella Black Bunney

Death:
1944, reg no 10035
Allan Alaric BURRAGE
Died: Kew, Victoria
Age:   84
Father: Thos Burrage
Mother:   Mary Wilson

It seems his 'formal' name is fairly consistent for documents

Electoral rolls from 1903 to 1943 show him as
Allan Alaric BURRAGE 1903 has it spelled Alarice

Lots of mentions on TROVE as Allan or Allan A, Allan Aleric, sometime Alaric; his death notice uses Allan Alaric.  I note he had a son Aleric - perhps the mentions you found are of the son?

Hi,
Aleric Allan was born in St. Kilda about 1889/90 & was the son of Isabella Black Bunney & Allan Alaric Burrage born in 1860, also in St. Kilda. Aleric Allan (Henry Aleric) was married in 1917 & widowed in 1918/19, with 1 daughter Lola Mary. I have a bible of his that has the name H.A. Burrage in the front cover & on his wedding certificate his name is Aleric Henry Burrage. I also have a copy of his birth certificate somewhere, saying the name he was christened was Aleric Allan. Then on his death certificate it says his name was Henry Aleric. I would have thought that in 1943 their bookkeeping would have been alot better, in Australia. He had 2 sisters- Florence Louise b. 1892 & Caroline May- called "Bunney" b. 1896 & 1 brother- John Claudius- called "Jack" b. 1890. I think Caroline liked to be called "Bunney" after her grandmother- Isabella Black Bunney.  Thanks for all your help so far...    Monique.

Oh, ok - the info I gave is obviously the father  :)

However, what I said still stands - for example,my sister b1948, has two Christian names.  The 2nd name is the one she has always been known by and there are times when the names are transposed or the 1st of them left off, although she uses both names in correct order  on formal documents.  Death Notices etc do not use the 1st of her names at all.

What is recorded on a certificate is what the informant gives and it is not always exactly correct.

I note he is Henry Alaric in his wife's death notice 1919 and in his death notice in 1943.

He consistently uses Henry Alaric in electoral roll entries from 1919 -1943

The birth index also gives his name as Henry Alaric

1889, Hawthorn Victoria reg no 22339
Hy Alaric Burrage
Father: Allan Alaric Burrage
Mother: Isabella Black Bunney
Birth Place:   Hawthorn, Victoria

Perhaps you have a baptism certificate which may have a different name from that on a birth certificate.

According to the index he used Henry Alaric for his marriage also

1917, Victoria, reg no 8426
Hy Alaric Burrage m   Mary Smith

You can download the certificates for $17.50 each.

For the siblings born around the same time as your man's birth (given by Judith), the father is consistently registered as ALLAN ALARIC
