Briggs of Tibshelf
« on: Tuesday 22 March 11 22:45 GMT (UK) »
Good evening

I have been tracing back my mother's family for some years now and have lots of information about when she was born, her mother, grandfather etc.

They all lived in and around Tibshelf, namely Lincoln Street, Haddon Street and Brook Street.

All the men in the family were coal miners, but am unable to find out what pits they worked at.

My grandmother was born around here in 1885 and moved to London sometime prior to 1906 when she married. She then returned to Tibshelf where my Mum was born. My grandmother died in Hawthorne Avenue, Tibshelf in 1957.

Would be grateful if anyone has any information relating to family Briggs whilst they were in the village.

Many thanks

This website shows that in 1921 there were Tibshelfs 1 2 3 4 pits owned by Babbington Coal Co. so these were the local pits.....

This website also states Long pit and Bottom pit at Tibshelf.....

Are their any other surnames that you are interested in ?  I also had family who lived in Tibshelf in the streets you mentioned.

Many thanks for the replies , they will be useful.

FAO Teresa

The only other name associated with Briggs was by the name of Walter Scott who lived with his family in 1901 at 15 Lincoln Street.

He was the brother of George Scott Briggs who lived at number 12.

Their mother, Matilda, gave birth the George before she was married the her husband Andrew, but then had Walter after the marriage. Obviously George took his mother's maiden name and became a Briggs, but Walter remained a Scott.

It's all got very confusing.

In 1901 my (GG Grandfather Joseph Draycott) Draycott family were living at 32 Lincoln St, Tibshelf.
I wonder if they knew each other I presume so has this was a mining family also.    Good Luck with your search.

Hi Teresa

Maybe so. I think that number 32 was across Brook Street which crossed Lincoln Street.

Number 12 where my Great Grandfather lived is no more. That end of the street has been rebuilt, but the other part of the street hasn't altered at all.

As you say, they were all miners and it was always a close knitt community.
