R10-2905/34
Burton on Trent Ecc District Christ Church
83   Moseley Street (not numbered,Linnett's Buildings)
Thomas Hardy,head,m,62,carpenter,Burton on Trent
Ann Hardy,wife,63,Burton on Trent
Esther Hardy,dau,13,scholar,Burton on Trent
Tom Freeman,son in law,m,22,brewers labourer,Notts,Newark
Emma Louise Freeman,dau,23,dress maker,Burton on Trent
Ada Freeman,grand daughter,5months,Burton on Trent

I looked for the Freeman entry in 1881 and had trouble finding it as Emma Louise seems to be dead and the other two are in the household of Tom's brother Robert with Ada listed as "daughter" which is misleading to say the least.
My heart goes out to Ann if she really did go on having kids until she was 50!

Hi Gardner,

Thanks again.

A Hester or Esther is on IGI as being the daughter of James and Fanny Hardy. May just be another one. Were Hester and Edith descried as daughters too on the 1861? Sometimes they claimed the illegitimate children of their daughters as their own. Certainly Ann must hae been very Hardy(!) She died in 7 Sep 1874 age 66.

thanks again

Kate

Hi,

Slight problem with my HARDY family. I have discovered there were two Emma HARDYs born in Burton around the same time, 1867 to 1869.

One Emma Hardy who married my g grandad Edward Driscoll in Bromley Kent, 1894
and one Emma Elizabeth who married Richard Edward Knight in Sep 1894.
in 1901 census she is 33.

There is an Emma parents William and Susanna aged 13 in 1881.
And another Emma parents Richard and Caroline/Eliza bap 1 Aug 1867. Can't find her in 1881.

Which is which?
Does someone have the 1871 to find The Ricahrd and Caroline family, which may have middle names? Or the baptismal records?

thanks

Hi again. The 1871 has no name index at the moment so it would be a long search to go through all of Burton in the hope of finding Emma No2.
Don't you have the marriage cert. for Emma Hardy/Edward Driscoll? What does it say for her father's name and occupation?

R10-2904/61
Burton on Trent
92 Station Street
Richard Hardy,head,m,43,brass founder,Derbys, Derby
Caroline Eliza Hardy,wife,m,31,brass founder,Derbys,Derby
Sarah Maria Hardy,dau,10,scholar,Derbys,Derby
Emma Hardy,dau,5,Staffs,Burton on Trent
Harriett Ellen Hardy,dau,2,Staffs,Burton on Trent
Charlotte Hannah Bigg,visitor,12,scholar,Notts,Southwell

These names seem to match the ones on the IGI from parish registers/BT so it seems that this Emma did not have a middle name - though she might have added one later :)

Thanks a lot Gardener.
how are you doing these days?
Is 1871 census indexed or do you have to trawl through the pages to find my Hardy families? I'm still not sure which Emma Hardy is mine. And even them why she and no one else left Burton and the rest of her extended family for London/Kent.

Kind of you to ask  :) I'm getting used to the tablets now so I'm doing just fine.
No, the 1871 is still not indexed though there is a street index for the larger places. I ended up looking for a street map to find Broadway Street and then skipped through the pieces to find the right area. I got lucky and it did not take long to find the family you wanted.
I used to go shopping in Burton years ago but all I remember is the dreadful smell of hops, no street names or anything useful!
