1876 birth records needed
« on: Sunday 27 March 11 20:47 BST (UK) »
Looking for the birth details of Kate Morton (or Martin) who I think was born on Feb 29 1876 in County Cork (possibly Ballydehob). Can anyone help advise? Many thanks

Do you have details of Kate's father's name and occupation - e.g. from a marriage cert ?

You can search an index to civil records on familysearch and order certs for any possible matches to check the details. Familysearch also includes some extracted birth records which might be worth checking if you have further clues.

Also available online are many RC parish records for south west Co. Cork on www.irishgenealogy.ie. Details for additional parishes are due to be added later this year.

Many thanks. Very helpful. I'd also like to track the parents of Kate, who are Cornelius and Catherine. Whilst there are pointers to potential records on FamilySearch, etc. where's the best place to find the official records? Are any of these in Cork itself? Many thanks.

For official records, i.e. certs, you apply to the GRO, but you need the references from the BMD index on familysearch first so you can order these.

Do you know Catherine's maiden surname ?

Here's a possible birth match for Kate with the date you mention :

 Name: Kate Martin
 Birthplace:   Shanarah, Cork
 Birth date:   29 Feb 1876
Parents : Cornelius Martin / Catherine White

Unfortunately this record does not give any reference details needed to order a cert.

This same couple seem to have a number of other children born in Skull (Schull),Co. Cork from about the start of Civil registration (1864) up until the mid 1870s. There's also an earlier child named Kate listed for the couple - presumably this child died young. Other siblings to Kate listed include Margaret, Cornelius jnr and Anne

Cornelius Martin / Catherine White records   (familysearch)

Do you have further details on Kate that you could use to confirm, or rule out these records ?
e.g. where did she end up, who/when/where did she marry etc..

Assuming that your Kate (1876) was also born in, or near to, Skull then this BMD Index record look like the best match :

 Name: Kate Martin
 Registration district: Skull
 Event type: Birth
 Year: 1876
 Volume : 5 / Page : 701

see :

 Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon
Details included on a Birth Cert

Re the place of birth mentioned on that extracted record for Kate of 'Shanarah'

Assuming that all the children were born in the same area and this is in the registration district that covered the town of Skull and surrounding townland, then I can only see one likely townland - that of Shanavagh. This is in the electoral district of Ballydehob.. which you mentioned earlier as a possible location
