Where can I go from here?
« on: Thursday 10 June 04 11:00 BST (UK) »
I have a stumbling block in research with my GtGt Grandfather John Henry Cox.

This is all the information I have

Married 1873 aged 24 father John Cox, a slater
1881 Census aged 32 born Lambeth
1891 Census aged 41 born Lambeth
1901 Census aged 53 born Lambeth

He is only given as John Cox in the above his middle name comes from his daughter's marriage cert.

Can anyone suggest how I might move back further on him.

I realise that John is about the worst first name to have to deal with. (I suppose I should be grateful he wasn't a Smith)

Cheers

hello chris1969
Do you have his birth details, from your info it would appear that he was born c 1849,so a quick check on freebmd -the following information I searched births 1848 - 1850 London
John Cox Lambeth March 1950 Lambeth Vol 4 Page 315
If he was born December 1849 then registration could be in March 1950.
also
John Henry Cox Bethnal Green Sept 1849 Vol 2 Page 6,
there were also many other John Cox's.

I guess I've got to send off for birth certificates until I get the right one.

I sent off for one (born 18/3/1850) father John a gardener, but I think gardener to slater is probably a leap too far

I'll send off for that one in the march qtr next

just another thought would the Baptismal Registers help?Re - sending off for certificates I think it's possible to ask the ONS when you request a certificate to check another reference point so you could ask to check that the father  of John Henry Cox is John Cox,and his occupation, I think they charge a small fee for checking reference points (they do online) but if you were to request the certificate from the actual Registry Office they may not
I've been doing a lot of "how to to find your family history" reading lately!
