Thanks, Jan and Toni!

Are either of these records possibly "my"  Gilbert? (The first one is dated 1861, like the one above. Could he have been enumerated in both places?)

Hi Joy

Re the 1861 census RG 09/519/179/9

It isn't the same person. This one is a G Wood aged 25 Private 64th Regiment born Rye. Address The Permanent Infantry, North Gate Barracks, Canterbury.

The other one definitely states he is Gilbert. Either could be yours, but gut feeling tells me it is the one on the boat.

Jan,

Thank you so much!

It is interesting to me how different John's and Gilbert's lives seemed to be.

John - oldest, Gilbert - youngest
John - farmer/laborer, Gilbert - seaman/laborer
John - 12 biological children, Gilbert - 1 adopted child
...and so on

I wonder if they stayed in contact or if they even really knew each other.

It would be great to be able to find out what happened to their sisters.

Thanks again, Jan.

Joy

Interesting isn't it. I wonder if he even knew his brother as there was such an age difference and the fact that John left for America in 1848? In the age of no telephones, emails etc the only way would be by letter and they may not have been that literate.

I'll see what I can do with the sisters, but not as easy as they probably married and with a common name like Wood are not as easy to trace.
