The National Archive Catalogue (TNA) weblink    ---    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/

For those that need help with using the  TNA Catalogue, follow these simple instructions:-

Note that in the top left corner, next to the words 'The Catalogue' there is a small search box.

To find out how the documents I've listed are recorded in the catalogue, take the first reference given, e.g. HO396/1 and type that into the small box. Then press the 'Go to reference' button.

You are taken to a page describing the content of the piece.

Now click on the button 'Browse from here'

You will be taken to a list of catalogued files which show how they have been indexed. Doing this will help you to identify specific files which may relate to your family.

Just above the list of files in the subseries, you'll see a main link to HO396 - click on the link 'Home Office: Aliens Department: Internees Index' and scroll down to Admin History where you'll see an explanation which may help to use the original records at TNA.

The idea of explaining this to give you an idea as to how to expand your use of the TNA site, which I think is the single most important online source for researching family history in England and Wales.
