Andrew & Mary had no children in 1851 but I can't see a marriage for them.

There is an 1850 marriage in Newcastle for a Thomas Andrew Cowan but Northumberland BMD shows he married Rachael McDougle

Mary died as Cowans in 1853

There are 2 possible births for son John in Alnwick on freebmd - shown as Cowens - as his birth cert will show Mary's maiden name

Births June qtr 1851
John Cowens   Alnwick  25 266

September qtr 1851
John Cowens   Alnwick  25 247

Hi

It is a common story for that part of Northumberland - they had an irregular marriage over the Border.  These marriages were legally binding.

Unusually, a record has survived of the marriage you are looking for and is included in vol II of the Irregular Border Marriages published by the Northumberland & Durham Family History Society http://www.ndfhs.org.uk/Sales/index.html - essential for anyone with family in northern NBL.

See here for more info:
http://www.gla.ac.uk/departments/scottishwayofbirthanddeath/marriage/

The notice of the marriage was published in the newspaper (the Berwick Advertiser if I have understood the intro correctly) on 15 Jun 1850.  The marriage is said to have taken place on 8th inst - that is, 8 June 1850:

Mr Andrew Cowans of Embleton High Mill to Miss Mary Winlaw of Embleton.

There is no other info.  As Carole has explained, you need to confirm Mary's maiden name by getting the birth cert of one of her children.

Good luck

Matilda

There is a Mary Winlow in the Embleton area in 1841:

HO107/819 ED13 Folio 3 p1
Embleton, Township of Dunstan
Dunstanhill
George Pringle 65 Pauper Yes [born in county]
Elizabeth Sim 45 F.S. [female servant] Yes
Mary Winlow 15 F.S. Yes
Joseph More 17 M.S. Yes
Harriot Anderson 10 F.S. Yes

An unusual household but perhaps some of the names mean something to you?

However it is possible that this is the Mary baptised in Berwick upon Tweed in 1824 - from the IGI:
MARY WINLAW

Event(s):Birth:     23 DEC 1823
Christening:     06 JAN 1824      Chapel Street Or Shaws Lane Or Relief Chap Unitedberwi, Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland, England
Father:     WILLIAM WINLAW    Mother:     ANN THOMSON

The IGI has a possible candidate for your South Shields born Mary:

 Mary Windlow
21 DEC 1823      St Hilda's, South Shields, Durham, England
     Father:     Thomas Windlow
     Mother:     Jane Windlow

Have run out of time to check the 1841 census for this one.

Good luck,

Matilda
