This is an old post, BUT I have been fiddling about just looking up my family names

CHALLEN
Elizabeth Hunt on 1871, I can only find one listed with MMN Bussey born 1862
lucy  Bussey married Robert Hunt

1871 Bro in law on this census is John Olive, I have tried to find a marriage between Edward Challen and Elicia, no luck, but 1896 Edward Challen married Eliza Olive, is this Elicia?

I have no idea what this poor child aged 8 is doing being a servant, thank God times have changed

Louisa Maud

1911 Edward Challen 68
Liza 64

No children o this marriage

The "wife" in 1871 could well be Eliza

There might have been a problem in that Edward had married Mary Ann Fassam in 1860 - I haven't found what happened to her. The daughter Caroline with them in 1861 is with his parents in 1871, along with another daughter Jane b 1862

Although it says servant it might have been that she was just living wth them but they didn't know what to call her relationship.  They could have been friends of the family or distant relative etc as you do often see children moving between households especially if a new baby or change in circumstances.

Yes, we can but hope that she was just being looked after by the Challen family , the thought of an 8 year being a servant is sad, but  days gone by these things happened, I try not to dwell on those sad times for the youngsters of the  time, as I said thank God times have changed

They are on FindMyPast but I can't see a baptism for her. There was another Elizabeth Ann Hunt registered in 1858.
