COMPLETED Help with reading this name Lunma?
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 13:57 BST (UK) »
Could this name be Lunma?
Copy attached it is mothers maiden name.
Any suggestions would be helpful as to the surname or the origin.
They were in Prussia in 1847, but I cant find this surname anywhere.
Thanks

It certainly looks like Lunma to me too.

I did a quick search for the name on
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home

I just entered the last name and pressed search, and came up with five results, four in America and one in Mexico.

Don't know if this helps at all as it doesn't give the origins of the name  :-\

Hi,

I believe the surname to be Leenma or Leinma. If you note the 'u' in the name Luege the sides of the letter are narrow where the letters in the questioned surname are wide. The letter 'n' in Hanna has narrow sides as well making them look like 'u'. Same with 'm' in seaman. I doubt with other letters similar to 'u' the writer would make a 'u' look different from a 'u'.

Good hunting.

Hi

I think it's Leenma too.  if you see the u in Cousins, above, has narrower strokes, so seems to point to a double e - as the e in Shepherd.

Interestingly, can't find either of those names, Leenma or Leinma, on any of the search facilities, yet Lunma does appear on FamilySearch pilot. I'll stick with Lunma.

There are many families of Dutch extraction in my area, with surnames ending in "ma."  Atsma, Bierma, Postma, etc.  Perhaps a direction for you to investigate with this name too?

I did find a few Dutch Lenema as submitted entries on Ancestral file.

Modified to say that there is a page of Lenema  (and a few Lenima) on the pilot site - Michigan, Ellis Island etc but mainly born Netherlands so Silvervista might have given a good lead  :)
