James O'Kane Immigration time?
« on: Friday 01 April 11 22:02 BST (UK) »
I know that my great, great grandfather was born near Coleraine (I guess in Macosquin) in the village of Glenhall.  Family states that he was born on Christmas day around 1841.  The year is figured because he was supposed to be 73 when he died in Oklahoma in 1916.  He traveled from NY to Kansas to Missouri and then settled in Oklahoma.  According to records, he was supposed to have immigrated from Ireland  in 1867 to NY.  I am not sure if that date is correct for when he first entered the U.S. and came over from Ireland.  Also, I am trying to find his exact birth date, parents' names (they were from Ireland too), and exact location of birth, and anything else I can learn.  Please, if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.  I had heard by family that there was a fire that destroyed some records.  I don't know if other family kin of uncles and aunts had any other records or not.  All information is welcomed.
Thank you:)
O'Kane, James, b. abt 1841  d.1916

I can't shrink the link (can't get it to work right now), but if you check this site, and type his name and place of death, it states he died at age 73:

Have you found him on the 1900 census?

Possible Marriage Record for Daniel O'Kane to Catherine Callhan 3rd May 1880 in Capiomo, Nemaha, Kansas - unfortunately does'nt list parents on this one either.

The couple together in 1885 Powhattan. Kansas.

Daniel Okane 46 Born Ireland. farmer
Cathern Okane 24 Born Missouri.
Mary W Okane 4 Born Kansas.
Marget E Okane 2 Born Kansas.
Danial Trimbol 17

It looks as if Katherine Callahan Aug. 17, 1862 Weston Platte County
Missouri, Died  Aug. 23, 1932 Kansas.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ckm/

And Daniel Died May 27, 1915 Kansas. However, the find a grave entry gives his birth as 1840 County Kerry son of Daniel & Johanna O'Kane.
Perhaps this is'nt the brother of James  ???

Perhaps it may be worth contacting the contributor of the find a grave entry for Daniel - since they seem to have the next generation back.  Cooincidentially the first 2 children born for both James and Daniel are Mary and Maggie/Margaret. Both married in Nemaha, Kansas.
The reference on the 1910 Census for Immigration in 1867 is followed by NA which means Naturalized - is this what you thought said NY (New York) ?

Must be loads of Newspaper reports on the deaths of this family in 1916.

Daily Ardmoreite published at Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma. Tuesday, March 7, 1916 has a short report according to the link below.

Wonder if someone assumed that James O'Kane of Co.Derry was related to Daniel O'Kane of Co.Kerry.
James' gravestone definately puts his birth in Co.Derry (Glenhall townland in Macosquin Parish near Coleraine).
