unknown location completed
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 21:42 BST (UK) »
Hi,

these two photos were found amongst my grandma's possesions when me and my brother emptied her house after she passed away. I wondered if any of your members could shed any light on were and when they might have been taken

thanks

Steve

Well, I think the two shots are of the same place, given the shape of the hill on the far right hand side of the bay and the fort (?) on that side.

Italy? No evidence, just a feeling from the houses?

I also think the photos are the different views of the same location, I know my grandmothers mother visited her sister in South Africa in the 1930's and I wondered if they were pictures that she brought back from her visit

I agree that both photos are of the same location, especially when you note the building at the end of the harbour in the distance.
(Follow the line down from the hill down to the sea).

The other interesting thing is the change from clipper sail ships in one shot to steam ships in the other.

Might there be a time difference between the photos as well?
Although from my extremely scant knowledge of such things, I believe the 1930's was the tipping point in sail to steam dominance, so it may not be a huge time difference.

Just muttering out loud here, take nothing as being authoritative.

The boat beached in the foreground in the older photo looks a bit gondolier like - has the feel of Italy to me.

I've tried enhancing these to get a better view, but they are very pixellated, even without enlarging, so I'd say they have had quite a bit of jpeg compression applied  :-\

Steve, if you are able to scan these again, it might be worth scanning some of the diagnostic bits, like perhaps the "fort" or whatever it is at the end of the wall on the harbour, some of the ships, etc.  Do them at 600dpi/ppi and save them with no compression.  There are resizing and scanning tutes at the top of the Photo Restoration and Dating board if you need help.

Cheers
Prue
