James TERRY - TERREY
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 01:31 BST (UK) »
My great great grandfather came out to Australia in 1842 as a free settler.

He was born in 1822 in Berkshire I think?  his ticket to come here said that he
was a native of Kingston Inn Yorkshire.

He came out with his brother William Terry he kept the spelling terry the both
made lives for them selves in Australia.

Their parents were James and Mary Terry and Mary was from Yorkshire I think?

I Hope that someone can help me.

thanks

Hi
What is it that you want to know about him? Do you know where he lived and died, did he have family here?

Both arrived on the Sir Edward Paget, 14 February 1842

Wondering if there is a transcription error here re their 'native place'?

James TERRY, 19, shepherd, 'native place' listed as Kingston Inn, Yorkshire, parents James and Mary Terry (both alive), has good bodily health and is 'likely to be useful', religion: Church of England, can read and write
The physician certifying his health resides in Bucks (not easy to read), as does the clergyman Rev R Meade.  I can't read the place of residence of the householders who vouched for him - T? Reynolds and Rich? Loosley - looks like Longwi??

William TERRY, 23, shepherd, native place Kingston Inn, Berkshire, parents, health same as James, religion: Methodist, can read and write,
All of William's referees appear to be in Brentwood which is in Essex, unless there is another one - quite possible in UK to have two places with the same name but I can't find it on Googlemap.

I think this is James and his family.

1841 census
County of Buckinghamshire, Parish of Princes Risborough, Lowick
James Tarrey   55, farmer
Mary Tarrey 55
James Tarrey   19
Mary Tarrey   15
Milescent Tarrey   13
Mark Tarrey   10
None born in county

The household next to them is a family headed by Richard Loosley, which is the name of one of James' referees.

GENUKI has this snippet of information which may be useful:
KINGSTON INN, a hamlet in the parish of Kingston-Bagpuize, county Berks, 5 miles W. of Abingdon

There is this baptism on IGI
William Terry
Christening: 22 JUL 1819  Longworth, Berkshire, England
Parents: James Terry and Mary

Possible siblings: (IGI)
Stephen Terry, 09 APR 1815 Longworth, Berkshire, England
John Terry -  01 JUN 1817 Longworth, Berkshire, England
 Ann Terry  10 JUN 1821 Kingston-Bagpuize, , Berkshire, England

Hope this helps

Hi joshsal and others,

I am a descendant of the two Terry boys who came out to Australia in 1842.
My line is with William Terry.
They both came from Berkshire. The Kingston mentioned is definitely Kingston Inn, Berkshire.
I have other info. if you want to communicate further.

My goal is to track the Terry name and variants in the 1500's and 1600's as I have hit a "brick wall" there.

Does anybody have any leads there?

Thanks

Hi to those researching the Terry family of Australia and Kingston Inn.

I live in Kingston Bagpuize, [was Berkshire] now Oxfordshire. It seems that Kingston Inn was another name for the village of Kingston Bagpuize.

The Longworth Parish Registers show a marriage of John Tarry [or Terry] of Stanlake, Oxon who married a Mary Bennett on November 7th 1726. Baptisms occurred 1808, 09,12,14,15,17,19 that's it in that parish. William was baptised Longworth on 22 July 1819 son of James & Mary of Southmoor, lab.
They seem to have been living in that part of Longworth which is now actually included in Southmoor and at a guess it could be a place called Bullocks Pit. I now looked at Kingston Bagpuize Parish register and found two more; 1821 Jun 10 Ann d of James and Mary Farmer and 1822 Nov 3rd James son of James and Mary, Farmer. Missed out John. 1817 Jun 1st at Longworth s James & Mary, lab of Southmoor.

Southmoor was a hamlet now a village and attached to Kingston Bagpuize and the whole is now known as Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor.

Hope this helps.
