Garrahan family - Roscommon
« on: Sunday 03 April 11 15:12 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

I am trying to trace details of my maternal great grandfather Nicholas Garrahan, in particular a record of his birth & parentage.
I  know he joined the 29th Regiment of foot, in Liverpool, on 18th November 1845 aged 18 years. His army record states he was born in 1827 in the parish of Kilcorkey, near the town of Castlereagh in the county of Roscommon.

He married Mary Ann Ogilvie on 14th March 1865 whilst based at Newry barracks. The marriage record states his father's name was Edward.

I have fairly good details of his later life, but nothing before his joining the army. Any help or guidance would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi,
Many thanks for responding to my post, much appreciated.

My connection to Nicholas Garrahan is through his son Edward (born Chatham in1867), and Edward's subsequent marriage to his first wife Isabella Sharp, in 1888.  My mother, now deceased, was one of the five daughters born to that marriage, which also produced ( I believe), two sons. I have been fairly fortunate so far in researching other areas of my family history, but Nicholas has remained a bit elusive.
Look forward to hearing from you again.

Llys

I am the great grandchild of Edward's brother, Gilbert.  Born the second son of
Nicholas in Newry, 1865.  I actually have a copy of Edward's birth certificate!

I have copies of attestation of age papers (purchased from the Society of Genealogists)
which Nicholas completed in April, 1867 when he was applying for the Assistant Warden
position in Chatham.

He states he was born February 20, 1828, in the town of Frenchpark, parish Tobohine(sic),
county Roscommon.  His baptism record shows he is the son of Edward Garrahan and
Mary Farrell.
