trying to obtain a birth certificate and marriage certificate
« on: Monday 04 April 11 08:35 BST (UK) »
i am looking to obtain a birth and marriage certificate of a man who was registered at basford. rather than using the GRO would it be cheaper to go there myself and order one and if so where would i go?
i am still learning all the registeration districts and boundries, and i am unsure whether the certificates would still be at basford or whether they would have moved to mansfield or notts.

forgive me if this is a daft question  ::)

Hi

Basford registers are divided amongst several current Registration Districts, The link below has information about the Basford Registration District

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/basford.html

Whilst many people prefer to use local offices it is not cheaper than the GRO, unless you can narrow down which local office to contact you might be better ordering from the GRO.

Rachelralph, many local offices are helpful & have a speedy service - like with other things there are the odd exceptions. There's a thread that's been running for the last year with a number of people's experiences from local offices:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,441803.0/topicseen.html
I haven't checked if anyone's posted on there about any of the offices you'd be looking at.

Here's the link to the council's webpage (which looks to be out of date on prices)!

Hi Rachel

Who are you looking for and when? Odds are that they are still at Basford as it is a major registration district for the county. The only problems may be at the borders of City or Derbys.

If you know name date etc then I may be able to look it up. Not sure though if it is cheaper locally than nationally. You will have to check that out on websites.

Kind regards

Jane

my ancestor was born at portland row kirby in ashfield in 1882. i have been told by another desendant of this man that the man who brought him up may not have been his father. this is from a 90 year old lady who remembers the man.  i figured maybe if i had his birth and marriage certs his real father may be on them. not guarenteed i know but his middle names suggest he must known,

thomas savile fuljombe moore born 1882

married a martha ann thorpe in 1902.

Hi Rachel....

It will be Basford Register office you need for events that took place in Kirkby.....

Do you have the burial record for Thomas S F Moore?..... I can give the link if you want it.

Sheila.
