Friday Street, Manchester - COMPLETED THANK YOU
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me please with a location for Friday Street, Manchester.  I think it was in the vicinity of York Street but I am not sure.  I don't think it exists today.

Thanks,

Luzzu  :)

No Offence was set in Friday Street.
The police station is actually a school, The King Of Kings School, Dantzic Street, Manchester, UK

The school you mention is in the building which was Charter Street Mission.
It was a real sanctuary for the VERY deprived children of Angel Meadow.
It had a girls ‘ hostel as many young girls coming to Manchester as servants were met by pimps who waylaid them and took them into a life of prostitution.Staff from Charter St would also be there and would offer the girls a bed and food until they got a position.
Being women they were more convincing, and the girls got a safe home .
It gave children free clogs on Christmas morning when a breakfast was served to the children. The clogs were branded on the wooden heel “Not  to be pawned” as fathers  would pawn the clogs for beer money and the children would be barefoot.Any pawnbroker who was found with such clogs was prosecuted.
Charter St was a real sanctuary in a district so poor and deprived and set many children on a good path in life.
It has had quite a few religious organisations using the huge building.
It is a great pity that it is not used for homeless people because there are laundry facilities,a tad old fashioned but better than nothing,a kitchen where communal cooking took place and nice partitioned cubicles with beds.
Charter St was formerly Danzig St if ny memory serves me correctly.
The very large Police Station was in Goulden  St, the largest in Manchester.
Tells you of the level of crime in that area but a good deal of that would be from genuine need.
A most interesting part of Manchester.
Viktoria,
