desperate for help PLEASE!!!
« on: Thursday 10 June 04 21:55 BST (UK) »
I am desperatley trying to find the birth date and parents of David Kennedy born in Dundee around 1810.

This is the only info i have on him at the moment:

David Kennedy married Margaret Nicol in Dundee 1st April 1834.
I have no birth date or parents names and would very much appreciate any help.
Margaret Nicol was born in 1807 so i presume David was also born around that time.
I know in the 1881 census for Cowgate Dundee Margaret was listed as head with 3 of their 4 children but no sign of David.
I would have thought that if he had died she would have been listed as widow.

Please can someone help.Anne. :'(

Moscan, thankyou so much for takeing the trouble to look for me.I did about 2 years ago find the birth of David Kennedy 1810 parents William Kennedy and Margaret Gowans but i am still not 100% sure this is my David,i know his marriage date is definatly right, and i know he was born in Dundee. He is a complete mystery,i cant even find his death. As regards to Margaret Nicol i have her parents they were Alexander Nicol and Jean Cant,i have Alexanders parents but not Jeans.I have an 1881 census record for 85 Cowgate Dundee with this info.Margaret Kennedy married age 74 Sack Sewer born Mains,Angus.Mary Kennedy daughter single age 40 Mill Worker born Dundee.Margaret Kennedy daughter single age 31 Reeler born Dundee.Edward Kennedy son single age 32 Cork Cutter born Dundee. This is also confusing,i have a burial record for Ann Kennedy died age 5 months in 1819 parents William Kennedy and Margaret Gowans,if this is my Davids sister that means there is a 9 year gap between the births of David and Ann,i dont think so do you.Anyway let me know what you think.Anne. :-*

I popped back onto Scotlandspeople when I got your message... there are 43 Jean Cant births beween 1700 and 1834 but to narrow it down it would help if you knew roughly where she came from...as none of them are from the same parish where they got married in

16 Dec 1789 CANT JEAN     ALEXR. NICOLL     F         MAINS AND STRATHMARTIN            307/00 0003

As to the 1881 Census... if she was born in 1807 as you thought she would be 74 ... the entry I found was

Dwelling:   174 Seagate
   Census Place:   Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
Source:   FHL Film 0203485     GRO Ref    Volume 282-4    EnumDist 2    Page 13

   Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace

   Occ:   Reeler (Mill Worker)
Edward KENNEDY   U   32    M   Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
   Rel:   Son
   Occ:   Cork Cutter

I agree it could be either but since one was widowed lol... I thought it may be her like you I could not find a David Kennedy of the right age...  I should have said last night that I did find a David Kennedy but much younger... could he be a son I wonder... I do have all the discs for the 1881 Census and will happily do any searchs for you on them...

I do agree with you it is unlikely that they would have had a 9 year gap between children.... I will look again on Scotlands people when I get a few more credits... I do budget myself to 60 a month lol... but I won't forget you and will stay in touch if I find anything...

Best Wishes

Mo

Mo,thankyou again for your help.Regarding Jean Cant, her husband Alexander was born in Little Inch Kirrimuir Angus 29th Jan 1765 so i am presuming she would have been born around the same year and they married at Mains and Strathmartin,i dont know how close together these places are but i should think she should be somewhere close by.Dont worry about her Mo you have been so kind already.Regarding Margaret Kennedy she did have a son David born in 1836 so the family at Seagate could be his siblings.Thankyou so very much for your help,it is very much appreciated.Anne. :)

Did no-one look at the earlier censuses?

1851 census, 184 Seagate, Dundee. David Kennedy, 48, Mason, born Mains; Margaret, wife, 42, born Mains; Mary, 10; David, 11; Edward, 7, all born Dundee.

1861 census, Cowgate, Dundee. Margaret K, widow, 61, born Mains and Strathmartine; Mary, 23; David, 21; Margaret, 19; Edward, 17, all born Dundee.

So if his age is accurate David was born in the parish of Mains and Strathmartine in 1802/1803 and he must have died between the 1851 and 1861 censuses.

And Edward's age in 1881 is either misrecorded or mistranscribed.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
