Francis MITCHELL bc 1824, POB ?
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 18:55 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I am hoping someone can help me find Francis Mitchell's family and try to decipher his POB in the 1851 census, below.
There are a few Francis Mitchell's in 1841 but I can't be sure which one he is.

1881
Tavistock, Devon
Paull's Buildings
Francis Mitchell, unm, lodger, 57 (1824), shoemaker b Truro

1871
Tavistock, Bannawell Street
Francis Mitchell , 45 (1826), shoemaker b Truro

1861
St Olave, Exeter
Bartholomew Street
Francis Mitchell, unm, lodger, 36 (1825),  Bootmaker, b Truro

In 1851 Francis is lodging at the home of Thomas Timmins in East Stonehouse, Devon.
Francis is 27 (1824), bootmaker b ??? Cornwall. It looks like Edlies. I’ve never heard of this place.

Francis death is registered in Dec q 1888, Tavistock.

Thanks
deb :)

Very close to Truro there is a village called Idless.

These 3 men may be one and the same.  ???
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hi Hack  :D

yep they are one and the same ... I just can't spot him in 1841 ....he may not have been in the shoe/boot making business at that stage.

Idless , sounds good to me! Will google it.

Thanks

Dear Deb,
The Mitchell connection I have (by marriage) sounds like it is the next generation, if it is the same line at all.

My grandfather’s cousin, Bessie Ione née Jeffery, married Wilfred Claude Mitchell in 1910 in Morenci, Greenlee County, Arizona.  They were both born in Cornwall but immigrated to the States at different times.  Wilfred Claude was a blacksmith according to the Arizona birth records for his children.

Wilfred Claude’s death cert lists Frank Mitchell (England) as his father; and Hanah Jane Heard as his mother (England.)

Another clue, although I understand Francis isn’t that uncommon a name, is Bessie and Wilfred Claude had a stillborn son they named Francis William.

While I understand your interest lies mostly with the Mitchell side, and mine with the Jeffery, the history of the emigration from England and the mining history is fascinating, and, at least in my files, incomplete.  It appears Wilfred Claude (aka Claude) had a brother in Arizona, also:  Earnest John Mitchell.  What do you know…just looked at Earnest’s death cert which gives his father’s name as Francis; mother was Hannah Jane Heard.
Regards,
Sheila
