Searching for Evans in llangelli
« on: Friday 08 April 11 11:32 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I'm in Australia and just received the birth certificate of my grandmother

Evelyn Ann Evans b 12 Jan 1906 to Charlotte Evans nee Williams and Arthur Evans (timberman, Colliery). Birth location Lower Gelli, Llangelli. I am visiting the UK soon and would like to trace further back but am hitting brick walls online. Does anyone have any connections/suggestions?

Many thanks
Georgie

First of all a warm welcome to Rootschat Georgie.

Evelyn Ann Evans's Birth is recorded in the Crickhowell District of Breconshire in the Jan/Feb/Mar quarter,Volume 11b,Page 100.

Crickhowell District at that time included Llanelly and I found living there in the 1901 Census this family;

Arthur Evans,born c 1870,Hereford Herefordshire,Coal Miner.
Charlotte Evans,born c 1871,Hereford.
George Evans,born c 1893,Hereford.
Mary Ellen Evans,born c  1895 Hereford.
Arthur Charles Evans,born c 1896,Hereford.
Gladys May Evans,born c 1899 Llanelly Breconshire.
RG13/5173/40/3.

I also found this marriage in Hereford in the Jan/Feb/Mar quarter of 1892  between an Arthur Evans and a Charlotte Williams,Volume 6a,Page 698.

Thank you so much William, that's amazing. I actually have tears streaming down my face as I have been trying to trace my fathers family for a long time.

You're a godsend - thank you and all my best wishes to you!

freebmd.rootsweb.com shows possible tragedy in the family:

Gladys May Evans, d. Sep quarter 1908, Crickhowell, 11b/73, aged 9
Arthur Evans, d. Sep quarter 1908, Crickhowell, 11b/75, aged 39

and although the age is a little off:

Charlotte Evans, d. Sep quarter 1909, Crickhowell, 11b/79, aged 44

Especially since the names are common, acquiring the marriage certificate of Arthur and Charlotte would be the obvious next step. If you're planning on doing some work at the local records offices while you're in the UK, for example to look at parish records, these would be the locations you need:
For Llanelly:

For Herefordshire:

Hi

I have been trying to find out if there were any Skerratts in Llangelli Wales between 1800 and 1870.  I have a letter dated 1943 from a great uncle which indicates his father was from Llangelly but I have no idea how to find this out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sue

Hi sue welcome to Rootschat  :D

I think it would be best if you started your own topic on the Skerratt family as this one relates to the Evans family and is nine years old.

If you could give us your great uncle's name and when and where he was born, that would be  a starting point for anyone trying to help.

I assume you picked this topic as it mentioned Llangelli.  :)
