William Davies born c. 1819
« on: Saturday 09 April 11 18:23 BST (UK) »
Hi,  I'm new to researching my family members from Wales.  I've been blessed to be a part of a Davies family and have discovered how much fun it can be to try to find accurate records for family members.   ;)  I'm hoping someone can help me figure out where to look for some information.

I'm trying to find the birth/christening record for my 3rd great grandfather William Davies.  I understand he was born around 1819 in Radnorshire. I have his marriage record from 1842 that indicates only that he was "Full" age.  His father was James Davies - who was a freeholder and  I believe his mother was Margaret Morgans.

Also, his marriage certificate indicates he was a servant and he lived somewhere called "Lower Tre_eme"  would there be a way to find out where he worked?

Thanks in advance.

Hello & Welcome to Rootschat!  ;D

No answers as yet, just more questions. Where did the 1842 marriage take place? Having the parish might help with the place name. Who were the witnesses? Do you have William on any census entries to give a place of birth, rather than just  the county?

Thanks... Questions are good.

William Davies married Mary Williams on the 30th of September 1842 in the Parish Church of Llanfihangel Nantmelan.  They were both full age which apparently means they were over the age of 21.  Both the bride and groom are described as working as servants.

I don't know if I mentioned this but William's father was James Davies, a freeholder and Mary's father was Thomas Williams, a laborer.

The witnesses to the marriage were Evan Watkins and Edward Gittoes

good grief, I must have have done another look up around the same time & place, because I remembere that Edward Gittoes was the parish clerk. Must get out more!

Right, think this could be William in 1841, given that ages are rounded down to nearest 5

Llanwenny, Llanvihangel Nantmellan, Radnorshire HO107/1459/2 folio 4 pg 3 - folio 5 pg 5
James Owens 30 farmer
Mary 30
James 11
Thomas 9
David 5
John 1
Mary 8
Margaret 4
Eliza 2
Michael Price 25 male servant
William Davies 20 male servant
John Bufton 15 male servant
Thomas Evans 15 male servant
Sarah Webb 25 female servant
Margaret Price 15 female servant

There's an Evan Watkins is on the same census page as the start of the Owens household.

Is your family at Bwlchllwyn in Cefnllys in 1851 with children Margaret, Mary, William & James?

I believe that you found the right family.  I just found the census for 1851 that I have and it looks the same as what you have.  (I need to get a map of Wales and figure out all these place names.)  I don't know how much people really moved around Wales back then.

William as an ag lab probably moved more than you might imagine. You can see from the places of birth for the children, first 3 in Llandegley, next 3 in Cefnllys and the the ones in Llanfihangel Rhydithon according to the 1861 census. William's place of birth is given as Llandegley & Mary's as Nantmel, neither parish is on the IGI.

This map should show the places of interest if you zoom out a little

Thank you for your help. It's much appreciated.

You said that the parish records weren't on IGI... does that mean that they've potentially been lost or that they just haven't been digitized yet?

not transcribed for the IGI &  possibly noit filmed. The only ones that seem to have been filmed are the BTs for Nantmel & marriage bonds for Llandeglau.

Powys archives have copies on microfilm of the registers, with the originals at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth

That is if either of them were baptised in the parish church. Always the possibility in Wales that their families may have been non-conformist.

Thank you for your information... it's been a big help.

I contacted the Powys Archive  And they came back with some information for me.  Which again was very much appreciated.

Here's what they found.

William Davies was baptized on 2/2/1819 he was the son of James and Margaret Davies.  James was a Schoolmaster

They also looked up William's parents marriage certificate  according to the Llandegley parish register they were married 16/5/1804  (they had 4 sons before my direct ancestor)

I just wanted to let people know I found some information... but I'm also wondering where I can go from here.  It doesn't look like I can get copies of the certificates/records.  Has my research for my Davies family come to a grinding halt until I can make a trip to Wales?  (not a bad proposition... just can't happen anytime soon)  Any suggestions?
