Hi all,

Am stuck with my Mum's side of the family.  My Nan Emily, Amelia Toomer was born in 1900, Wandsworth.  Her father Walter born in 1880 came from Croydon as did his father Thomas and his father George from Norwood, Surrey.  Now I have drawn a blank as can't trace George back prior to his marriage to Jane Harding in 1851, Croydon!  :(  George was born c1822 and a bricklayer by trade.  He and Jane had  4 sons and two daughters. 

Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?  Is there anywhere online that I could maybe view parish records in the Croydon/Norwood area for example to see if George was baptised and to find out the name of his parents?

Any help would be much appreciated.  :)

Are you sure his name's George & not James ?
Can't see a George married to a Jane but there is a James occ. bricklayer b.1822/3 Norwood,Croydon.

The only George Toomer in Surrey on the 1861 census is unmarried!

Hi all,

Just noticed I made a mistake on my original post.  George married Jane in 1841 and not 1851, sorry about that.   :-[  :-[

I found his marriage as George, James TOOMEY on familysearch and Free BMD to Jane Harding.  On checking the Census records he then appears as James Toomer on the 1851, 61, 71 and 1881.  

Have I made a massive mistake and he is actually James?   >:(

The 2 I've traced are a Walter with father George & the other with father Thomas some of which KG has put up.
Maybe we should start again with what you know positively.

Ok my Gt Grandfather was Walter Toomer, born 1880 in Croydon.  Walter married Lucy Greenbrook in 1898 Battersea.  Father is listed as William on the record via Ancestry!   :'(  Walter definitely has a brother Frederick born in 1865 and he married Ellen Read in 1889, Wandsworth.  On Fredrick's marriage record his father is Thomas Toomer!  I believe Thomas died in 1895.

No unfortunately I don't have his marriage certificate only his death.
