That's interesting - IGI Family Search gives Ellen, James John and James William's baptisms as St John the Baptist Church, Croydon (also known as Croydon Parish Church) whereas Surrey Baptisms give them in All Saints, Upper Norwood.

Upper Norwood may have had a Chapel made out of Croydon Parish Church & therefore would appear in both sets of books.

Hi all,

thanks for the latest replies.

Groom it certainly sounds like the same family as I have the same list of names of siblings for Thomas although Ellen, Rebecca is sometimes listed as Eleanor!!

Unfortunately I don't have access to those baptism records as Ancestry does not cover Surrey! :(  Just out of interest where did you find these records? Am I right in thinking you have to pay for them?

I am off to bed now but will think about what has been discussed and be back online again in the morning.

Many thanks again.

The Surrey ones are on a CD, but there are quite a few on Family Search  http://www.familysearch.org  which is free.

Hi Jan,  I do use familysearch infact used it a lot when I first started my research and always recommend the site to others when they are first starting out.   ;)  Have been looking at what I have on the Toomer family again and have just made a discovery which I didn't know about before!

My Gran Emily Toomer appears on the 1911 Census listed as the niece of William and Mary Ann Johnson.  Also on there is Sarah Ann Read (also as niece) Sarah is the daughter of my Grandfather Walter's sister Mary Ann Read (nee Toomer).   I looked up marriages for William Johnson (a carman) and added spouse name Toomer and sure enough William married Mary Ann Langridge (nee Toomer ) in 1896!  Mary Langridge married Thomas Toomer (Walter's Dad?) in 1862 Croydon.  I thought Thomas had passed away in 1895 which would tie in with his wife getting remarried a year later to William Johnson.  Hope you are able to follow this?!

As we have said the father's name is either William or Thomas on Walter and his siblings marriage records on Ancestry, on Eliza Toomer's marriage father is William Johnson Toomer(carman) on her sisters marriage Anne father is William Toomer (bricklayer) on the other childrens marriages the father is Thomas.  William Johnson Toomer being father on Eliza'a marriage would make sense as she married in 1897 (two years after father Thomas died) but it does not make sense with the other children?

Also on the 1891 Census Mary Ann Toomer is the head of househould with no sign of husband Thomas.  The family are living at 4 Stockdale Rd, Battersea where interestingly William Johnson iswas also living at the time!  :)  4 Stockdale Road features a lot in my family history; My Gt Grandfather Walter was living there at the time of his marriage in 1898, he was also living there at the time of the 1891 and 1901 Census.  My Gran Emily Toomer is living at that address with William and Mary Ann Johnson on the 1911 Census.

4 Stockdale Rd. has 4 families listed so appears to be an apartment block with William Johnson occupying one of them.
As all of the children were born while Thomas was still at home you have no alternative but to assume they are his, however if Thomas left soon after Walters birth & William Johnson moved in the children would accept him as head of the house & is probably the reason for the confusion on some of the marriage certs.
As divorce wasn't an option for ordinary working class people they would have to have waited until after Thomas' death to marry hence the 1896 marriage.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your reply.

I don't have a Kate Toomer on my tree however, she may well be part of the same TOOMER family!  ;)

I've just looked at the marriage record on familysearch where is says her father was Harry.  Do you by any chance know anything about his siblings?

Regards
