Toomer family, Croydon area

Ok my Gt Grandfather was Walter Toomer, born 1880 in Croydon.  Walter married Lucy Greenbrook in 1898 Battersea.  Father is listed as William on the record via Ancestry! 

What record was that on Ancestry?

It was on the London Marriage & Banns , 1754 -1921.

I think you need Walters marriage cert. as the info. we're getting says his father is Thomas.

I looked at the London Marriage records myself.

Definitely says father William, a Carman.
 
Just a thought - Thomas didn't die until 1895:

Deaths, December qtr 1895
Croydon district,    vol 2a, page 133
Toomer, Thomas

So where was he in 1891?
Maybe Walter's father really was William?! 
And Thomas upped and left the family?

So it's the birth certificate that could be telling.

I don't have full acces to Ancestry but have you looked up one of Walters siblings to see if they say the father is William.
Thomas was around when Walter was born as they both appear in 1881 together.
BTW Thomas's christening lists his father as George James but seems to be going under the name James for the censuses.

This is the best I can find:
Walter b.1880 = parents Thomas b.1842 = Mary Ann Langridge.
Thomas b.1842 = parents George James (Toomey) b.c.1823 = Jane Harding(calling himself James Toomer on the census)
George James (Toomey) b.c.1823 = father Thomas Toomey.
Found Frederick lists his father as Thomas on his marriage as you said.

Hi Jim,

the father varies between Walter's siblings on the marriage records via Ancestry;

1886  Mary Ann Toomer married Henry, Charles Read (father Thomas)
1889 Frederick Toomer married Ellen, Charlotte Read ( Frederick's dad is William)
1892 Anne Toomer married William Luffingham (her father is William)
!894 Emily Toomer married William Lewis (her father is Thomas)
1897 Eliza Toomer married Frederick Bissett (father is William, Johnson Toomer).

The last one is interesting and something I had not made a connection with  before.  My Nan Emily Toomer on the 1911 Census listed as the niece of William Johnson who is the head of household, Sarah Ann Read is also the niece( she is the daughter of Henry Read and Mary Ann Toomer, Mary Ann is the sister of Frederick and Walter.

Does any of this help?

On all the christenings apart from Eliza which I can't find the father is named as Thomas.

I don't know if you have this or if it is any help. All these baptisms took place at All Saints, Upper Norwood. I'm not sure if it was the same family or if there were two men of similar names.
