Can you tell us all the information you already have about him?
I see from your latest post that you have a wife's name and year of marriage - what else have you got?
Remember 1881 census is free to search - have you found him on there?

If you have his marriage - have you found his fathers name from the marriage cert?

Hi Ramzy, and welcome to RootsChat!

Where did your grandparents marry?

The only marriage I can see on the GRO index for 1913 is between George E ARKWELL and Mary Elizabeth JOHNSON.  (Mar Q, Lewes 2b 331)

This is probably the same George E ARKWELL who died Mar Q 1938 aged 65.  (Lewes 2b 288)

However, George Ernest ARKWELL of Lewes (aged 42) gives his wife as "Frances E" on his WW1 pension documents in 1914.   ???

There is no obvious birth registration in the GRO index, and no George Arkwell on census except the one Kerry found, unless he's hiding under a very bad transcription or something!  Iis it possible that he was married twice?  He would have been 40+ when he married in 1913, so it's not impossible.

Added: post crossed with lizb!

Do you have (or can you get sight of) a birth cert for one of his children? If he was a granparent, then it should be one of your parents!
If so, what mothers maiden name does it give? Indeed, what mothers name altogether.

Also - interesting he was George Ernest, I did see a marriage for a George Edward in 1900 in Warwickshire, but I can now ignore that!

Hi,
There are 28 pages of records for a  George Ernest Arkwell bc 1873 Shotley Ipswich in the Army Service Records on FindMyPast. Lots to go through and not convinced they are all Georges (looks like Ashwell in later ones but i might be wrong)
Lots of similar clues, Eastbourne, Lewes, mother Emily Arkwell, wife Frances Eliza as given by Manchester rambler.
The address of mother points to 1901 census Rg13/879  20/31 ( she possibly remarried) with possible siblings and half siblings  for George Ernest.
Working backwards  George could possibly be Ernest on the 1881 census
Rg11/1037  32/25
Strange about the marriages though.

A thoroughly unhelpful possibility:   ::)

Births Mar 1873
ARKWELL  Male
Woodbridge 4a 710

However, Woodbridge registration district covers Felixstowe, and I think that's where George's parents are recorded in 1871:

RG10/1758/23/4 - Felixstowe
[...]
William HARKWELL  28  Gunner Royal Artillery  b. Cirencester, Gloucs
Emily HARKWELL  22  Gunner's Wife  b. Eastbourne
Alfred W HARKWELL  3 mo  Gunner's Son  b. Harwich, Essex

This matches the 1881 family with "Ernest".

("Alfred" is registered as William Alfred ARKWELL, Dec Q 1870, Tendring 4a 269.)
