I have done a little more research on the family and I have found out that Thomas Callaghan, my 3x great grandfather died in 1909 making his birth year c1840 but because registration in Ireland began later than it did in England and Wales I am unable to get a birth certificate to find out who his parents were.

Ages can vary so it is difficult to get an approximate birth year

Are these your family?

Death 69 yrs - birth about 1840

1901 53 yrs birth about 1848

Ellen
1901 52 yrs abt 1849
1911 69 yrs abt 1842
Death 1924 - 74 yrs abt 1850. (Would be 17 on marriage  :-\)

Snap - I just found that marriage too.
On rootsireland.ie there are no Ellen Melia baptisms in Meath 1835 - 1855 but 1 in Dublin 1843, 2 in Kildare 1835 & 1841, 1 in Galway 1852 [a bit late] & 1 in Wicklow 1835. 10 baptisms for a Thomas Calaghan in Meath 1843 - 1853 same period but none in Navan!!

Here's the Griffiths for Navan

According to the website http://www.rootsireland.ie/ Michael was born/christened on 19 October 1870 at St Mary's, Navan, Meath, Ireland.

No birth certificate was found for Michael so I'm wondering if his birth was before registration began.

He was the son of Thomas and Ellen Callaghan (formerly Melia) who were born in Navan c1848 and c1850 respectively.

Michael's siblings are;

Margaret (9 March 1874)
Christina (2 March 1876).  No christening or birth can be found for this child so I'm wondering if Christina and Josephine are one and the same.
Josephine (2 March 1876).
Thomas (1877).  No birth certificate found for this child.
Ellen (30 August 1879).  All born in Meath

Are there any clues with regard to the Baptism sponsors or birth informants?
For example, the informant for Ellen’s birth is Kate Callaghan occupier.

Why are you all giving me information that I haven't asked for and have anyway?? ???

I am only interested in finding out the parents of Thomas Callaghan who was born c1840 in Meath, Ireland.  Registration there began much later than in England and Wales so I cannot obtain a birth certificate.

I have looked for Thomas' baptism but have not been able to find it.

I AM ONLY INTERESTED IN THOMAS AS I HAVE THE INFO ON MICHAEL AND HIS SIBLINGS.

Thanks.

I was giving Hallmark the birth and the marriage, rather than you,  because more experienced researchers may know where to look.

We are trying to help you. Sometimes it is wise to look at the broader picture rather than a narrow one.

As I stated earlier, Kate Callaghan was the informant for the birth of Ellen.
She may be a sister or mother to Thomas.
Other relatives may be Godparents or informants to other children or witnesses.

We are aware of your search but mistakenly thought you might appreciate a different perspective on searching for clues to find Thomas.

Heywood
