Irish family history
« on: Wednesday 13 April 11 14:25 BST (UK) »
I really want to trace my Irish ancestry but due to the lack of records I'm finding it really hard.

It took me four years to find out about my 2x great grandfather Michael Callaghan's birthplace and now I find I am stuck with his parents and siblings.

I have his parents names and birth/christening dates as well as the birth/christening dates of some of Michael's siblings but I can't get any further back or confirm the information already collected.

Could someone please give me any tips so I can hopefully see how far back this line goes?

Thanks.

According to the website http://www.rootsireland.ie/ Michael was born/christened on 19 October 1870 at St Mary's, Navan, Meath, Ireland.

No birth certificate was found for Michael so I'm wondering if his birth was before registration began.

He was the son of Thomas and Ellen Callaghan (formerly Melia) who were born in Navan c1848 and c1850 respectively.

Michael's siblings are;

Margaret (9 March 1874)
Christina (2 March 1876).  No christening or birth can be found for this child so I'm wondering if Christina and Josephine are one and the same.
Josephine (2 March 1876).
Thomas (1877).  No birth certificate found for this child.
Ellen (30 August 1879).  All born in Meath.

He married Julia Gerrard on 16 January 1898 at the Catholic Chapel of Navan, Navan, Meath, Ireland.  Michael died on 8 July 1952 at Mill Hill Top, Wilsden, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

Michael, his wife Julia and eldest son John Thomas appear on the 1901 Irish census.  John Thomas (my great grandfather) was born on 11 November 1898 at Mill Hill Top, Wilsden, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England.  I have his birth certificate.

I have done a little more research on the family and I have found out that Thomas Callaghan, my 3x great grandfather died in 1909 making his birth year c1840 but because registration in Ireland began later than it did in England and Wales I am unable to get a birth certificate to find out who his parents were.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I've already looked there many times and not been able to find anything.

Thanks anyway.

Please read what I said earlier.

I am looking for Thomas' parents not Michael's!

I already know all about Michael.
