Johann Heinrich Grandt, pork butcher
« on: Wednesday 13 April 11 21:01 BST (UK) »
My great great grandfather emigrated from Wuerttemberg to Derby, England sometime between 1851 and 1857.  He was born in Mannheim in about 1833.  When he arrived in England he used the name Henry Grant, married a Martha Thompson in 1857  and opened a pork butcher shop in Moreledge, Derby.  In 1860's they moved to Chesterfield.

I have read the publications on pork butchers in England and have tried to find naturalisation certificates from TNA with out success.  I plan to visit Wuerttemberg in May this year.  Can anyone suggest any further avenues of research?

Hi Carol,

I'd contact the Mannheim Archive for City History (Stadtarchiv Mannheim), address and necessary infos below. They should have most docs and infos you need for further research and if not could give you info on where to find respective church records for example.

Tried to translate the most important phrases etc. Hope you'll manage to get around this way. Not sure how they'll treat queries in English. But just give it a try.

Rgds from Hamburg and good luck,
Gisela

Thank you Gisela for such a prompt and helpful reply.  I have taken up your suggestion of writing to Stadtarchiv Mannheim.

Hi Carol,

I'm not sure if you will see this, but I have recently been researching my family history and have found that John Henry Grant was my great-great-great grandfather!  I am decended from his daughter Adelaide, what about you?

I was wondering whether you had found out any more about his emmigration from Germany and when he settled in the UK?
