Taking my research further - Advice
« on: Thursday 14 April 11 18:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have been tracing my tree for some time now and have quite an extensive tree.  How do you take it back further than 1841 census?

I would really like to try and find more info on my g x4 grandfather - Jonathan Lawrence b 1799 Walworth Surry, have lots of info on him but no parents, brothers and sisters are not 100%

Can anyone help or point me in the direction of where i would find his birth records etc

I am subscribed to the usual tools that we use, but not found much there

Many thanks  :)

Hi

Have you tried looking on Family Search  http://www.familysearch.org  or Freereg   http://www.freereg.org.uk/? They might help.

I suppose if there's no more, what is satisfying is looking at how people lived, and the conditions of life at the time.
Even your ancestors job may give an interesting insight into how life was.

Thanks, for the links  :)  Yes I like to look at how our ancestors lived, the clothes they wore etc.  There is a fab show on BBC2 at the mo called filthy cities, glad I'm a 21st century girl.

I often wonder now in the age of documents, etc what we will leave behind for our future to find, a lot more than our lot eh!!

Thanks again

There's a possible marriage,July 1 1821,St.Leonard's Shoreditch=Mary Ann Williams, this is based purely on the birthplace of their eldest, assuming I've got the right Jonathan Lawrence occ:shoemaker married to a Mary Ann that is.
IGI pilot doesn't give any more details but Ancestry does have the marriage/banns listed but I don't have full access, maybe someone who has can take a look.
Unfortunately the IGI Walworth births start 1825.
You can put a link to this post on the Surrey board & see if anyone has the PR's.
My understanding is that the records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives.

Thanks Jiim, this is the right Jonathan later on he is John, but i have records of mary ann and her will with john leaving his shop to her in his will.  Williams trail for another day.

I have his shop in trade directories too, but would just love to be able to find his brothers and sisters etc.  Marriage record doesnt show father like it did in later records so my brickwall i suppose,

I will keep trying to knock it down  ;)
