Hi Viv

I have had a PM from Karen and she says that  she believes her 'Aunty May' was Mary Webster.  I'll leave her to do the checking but it does look as though Alfred and Mary were cousins though I'm not sure of the proximity.

Thank you - Greensleves and Blodwen - looks like  - and this has to be guess work from - older family member in the past - who does not remember many details - that Aunt May - married "Uncle Fred" - Alfred J webster is the name on my Grandfathers Marriage cert.... Uncle fred - so it was said - was a half brother of Herbet webster.????
Or even a brother - but can't see that...

fred (Alfred J webster) signs the M cert with Herbets sister - Florence selina Webster - so the family link is strong - its just the working out part that I am stuck with - no family members left now - only one - who remembers the Aunt May to Uncle Fred.......... and a family link.............. trying to work this information to a living golfer of the present....

Thank you both again - best wishes - karenx

Hi Karen,

did a bit of research into the parents of Alfred and Herbert Webster and found the following:

Herbert Webster b. 1868 Atherstone, Warw.- father of Herbert Webster b. 1897

John Webster, b. 1852 Ashby, Leics - father of Alfred J Webster b. 1890

Census 1871 - RG 10, 3167, 130, 21
Living: Long Street, Atherstone

William Webster, b. 1824 , Warwickshire
Mary Webster, b. 1831, Leicestershire
JOHN WEBSTER, b. 1853, LEICESTERSHIRE
William Webster, b. 1856, Staffordshire
Thomas Webster, b. 1860, Leicestershire
Harriet Webster, b. 1864, Warwickshire
Arthur Webster, b. 1867, Warwickshire
HERBERT WEBSTER, b. 1869, WARWICKSHIRE
Mary Ann Webster, b. 1870, Warwickshire

So, looks like you were right - Alfred J and Herbert are cousins

Which I believe would make 'Uncle Fred' and 'Auntie May' second cousins.

HI,

Very late in the day and this board is probably closed by now.  I am related to a living golfer called Webster and we are related to the below family via William Webster, b. 1856, Staffordshire.  So we are distantly related.  I hope that helps, if the mystery is still outstanding after all these years.

Census 1871 - RG 10, 3167, 130, 21
Living: Long Street, Atherstone

William Webster, b. 1824 , Warwickshire
Mary Webster, b. 1831, Leicestershire
JOHN WEBSTER, b. 1853, LEICESTERSHIRE
William Webster, b. 1856, Staffordshire
Thomas Webster, b. 1860, Leicestershire
Harriet Webster, b. 1864, Warwickshire
Arthur Webster, b. 1867, Warwickshire
HERBERT WEBSTER, b. 1869, WARWICKSHIRE
Mary Ann Webster, b. 1870, Warwickshire
