Acton Beauchamp Query
« on: Friday 15 April 11 21:41 BST (UK) »
Hi!  I have ancestors named Pingree (Pengrey, Pengry, Pingrie, Pengriffe) who lived in Acton Beauchamp for several generations.  There were actualy several generations in a row in my line of Job Pingrees from Acton Beauchamp.  I'm trying to find out where they were buried (St. Giles?).  I'm also trying to find out the names and ancestries of the Job Pingree wives from this area.  Many of my records just say "Mrs. Job Pingree"--or just a first name.  Does anyone on rootschat live in the area or know anything about this family?  This is one of my favorite family lines, and I have a lot of dead ends in England.  :)  I would be so grateful for any information!!!

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

With the various spellings of this surname we would need more info such as christian names and birthyears.  The first census to show actual birthplaces is the 1851

The 1851 census for Acton Beauchamp has a Job Pingrey (shown as aged 43 but image is probably 13) b Acton Beauchamp and appears to be the step son of Samuel Banford whose wife is Charlotte

There are a large number of submitted IGI entries for Samuel & Charlotte Banford including this one

Job Pingree   Birth:  21 NOV 1837   Acton Beauchamp, Worcester
Death:  22 MAY 1928  (no death in England/Wales on freebmd for this date)

Father:  Samuel Banford
Father:  Job Pingree
Mother:  Charlotte Tarrant

1841 census for Acton Beauchamp - all born in Worcestershire

Job Pingree 50 miller
Charlotte 25
Margery 5
Job 3
William  40 miller
John Bond 45 ag labourer
William Margam 25 ag labourer

Jim and Carole, you are both amazing!  Thank you!!!

Jim, how did you come up with that much information so quickly?  You're a lot better at this than I am!  Perhaps if I give you the dates I have you will succeed in locating a match.  For some reason I can't.  I'll list them below.

Carole, the Job Pingree you found on the 1841 census (married to Charlotte Tarrant) is my great-great-great grandfather.   Why am I having such a hard time locating information on his lineage?

Some of my great-great aunts worked on this line years ago.  I have their information, but can't figure out where they got it.  They even listed some christening dates, but not the parish:

Job Pingree 5th (b. 2 July 1786, d. 29 Oct 1843)
Husband of Charlotte Tarrant (b. 7 Feb 1814) dau of William Tarrant and Unknown

Job Pingree 4th (b. 13 Jan 1757, d. 12 Jan 1828)
Husband of Mary Estop (christened 12 Jun 1757, buried 7 April 1832) dau John Eastop and "Hannah"

Job Pingree 3rd (b. 28 Aug 1718, d. 31 Oct 1761)
Husband of Mary Wright (b. 1723) dau of Unknown and Unknown

Job Pengriffe 2nd (b. abt 1690, d. 7 April 1748)
Husband of Margery Essex (christened 24 Nov 1693, d. mar 1753) dau of Unknown and Unknown

Job Pingriffe 1st (b. abt 1641, d. 30 Mar 1719)
Husband of "Elinor" (b. abt 1655)  dau of Unknown and Unknown

George Pengriffe (christened 22 Aug 1617)
Husband of "Jane" dau of Unknown and Unknown

John Pengriffe (christened 23 Mar 1587, d. after 1618)
Husband of "Elizabeth" (b. abt 1584) dau of Unknown and Unknown

Thomas Pengriffe (b. abt 1548, d. 10 Oct 1604)
Husband of "Alice" (b. abt 1550, d. 16 Feb 1588) dau of Unknown and Unknown

And all these men are listed as having been born and died in Acton Beauchamp, Worcestershire.  That must be incorrect.  Although I did find a record of Charlotte Tarrant Pingree (listed on the census Carole found) selling a farm in Acton Beauchamp, located near the border of Worcestershire and Herefordshire.  I believe it's still being operated as "Acton Mill Farm."  Job Pingree was a Miller, as the census indicated.   Perhaps his forebears weren't from the area at all!  :)

Thanks, Carole!  A lot of the information in Family Search matches--pretty nearly--what I have, which is comforting.  Most of the same things are missing that I'm missing.  Perhaps over the next few years, UK parish records will be available online.  I've found indications that microfilm of parish records exists, but I have to travel to a library to access it.  Perhaps that would be the best way to fill in these gaps.  :)

I'll be traveling to England with my husband in about a month, and I'm trying to decide if my time will be better spent visiting parishes in Worcester or visiting UK genealogy libraries.  This is just one of the UK lines I'm working on, and my head is spinning knowing that I'll just have a few days to sleuth around.
