Right o, I found this from a different forum in answer to a question you posted:

Information from .... a spread sheet containing very old census data for Annan.

Joan Farish appears on the 1811 living at - 177 Burgh South Side (living with - William (occupation - weaver), Esther, Peter, William, Anne, Joseph, Agnes Robert, Esther & Jonathan Farish.

She is also on the 1821 living at - 217 Windmill (living with - William, Aggie, Robert, Jonathan, Willie (a female), Esther & Peter Farish.

This might help anyone who'd like to try to help you.  ;)

Hi Ruskie,
Thanks for all the information you have supplied, seems to fit in my g/grandmother presumably being the Esther shown as a child in the family.
I know nothing about this side of the family so hopefully will go on from here.
Thanks again maybe as you say some other Farish relation may get in touch.

Do you want Farish/Davis the marriage entry? If so, please send me your email address via PM.

It appears as if my reply from the other night was not posted.

Ruskie, thank you very much for the information you provided.  My GGG Grandfather was William Farish from Ecclefechan, in Haddom parish in Dumfriesshire.  I would love to get my hands on the spreadhsheet to which you refer.  How may I see this 1811 and 1821 census file/image(s)?

Respectfully,

Could someone tell me also if Farish is a sett of the Ferguson clan.
It might be a sept, but a sett is the thread count of a tartan design :)

As for clans, it may be said to be a sept of Ferguson in modern times, but don't forget that most of the 'facts' about clans, septs, tartan etc were invented in the 19th century. In particular, assigning certain surnames to membership of a particular clan is very suspect.

G F Black's The Surnames of Scotland doesn't mention Farish specifically, but says that Farrie or Farries is from the Irish O'Fhearguis, meaning a descendant of Fergus, and it occurs in Dumfries-shire. The main base of the Ferguson clan was in Mar and Atholl, a considerable distance away in the days when the only available power for travel was muscles on land and wind at sea.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Also, a thread on this site. I'm not sure if the offer is still available though. Pam isn't on very often these days.
